From Channel 10 WSLS:

It's a very unusual sponsorship for NASCAR - a Christian University cruising around the race track.

"There are not many race car drivers that have a university on their car, especially one that you actually go to," says Stephen Berry.

The Liberty University freshman is promoting his school and his faith as he chases after his dream of being a professional NASCAR driver.

the article referenced #71, so I'm guessing he must have a new car by now.

somehow I doubt he has the money for multiple cars , so I'd guess he's upgraded from last fall.

good luck to him- cool that LU is still sponsoring him.

What in the world do you people find entertaining about cars going around in a circle?

Well, since we're not a mid-major power in men's basketball yet, we find it more entertaining than losing to Winthrop over and over again.

They had the car in front of the stage at convocation this morning and the driver, Berry, spoke a few minutes. He read his speech, but I found it entertaining that he's already a good disciplined nascar driver, he thanked every sponsor at the end.

When I used to think that's all it was, I wasn't entertained. Once I educated myself about the sport a bit, I've grown to enjoy watching it. Those "circles", as you call them, vary greatly in size, shape, bank and yes, even turns. (Why do people always forget that Nascar races road courses too?) In order to drive around all of those different "circles", some pretty intense engineering has to happen by the teams that build the cars, and they're not given a lot of options on how to do it. Pit strategies and decisions are also pretty interesting from a strategy point of view (in much the same way football strategies are interesting), and for the ladies, the soap opera-like feuds between drivers are certainly there.

I'll also back up PAmedic. I enjoyed watching races on tv casually. After going to a race at Richmond, I came away a fan. It totally changed the experience for me.

agreed with scorcho and medic. NASCAR is a great sport, and once you go to a race, i believe you would be hooked. it is funny how the uninformed mock the sport, but when they actually learn about it and attend a race it all chnages.

NASCAR bores me to tears watching it on TV but watching it live and in person it's unreal, especially when you can see the entire track all at once.

Just have to remember to bring the earplugs and sunscreen.

I second this. I can't watch it for more than 5 minutes on TV. But I made a trip to Lowe's Motorspeedway a few years back and it was amazing. Luckily, my roommate had a radio with soundproof headphones so we could listen to the pit crews. Otherwise I don't know how long I could have kept my head from exploding.

I've seen threads merged on other messageboards but I don't think thats a moderator option on this one. Plus I'm not a mod in either of these sections.

I'll see what I can do. It's actually my day off...well, my first of four days off. So if my son decides to take a nap, I'll give it a shot.

From the Bedford fishwrap:
Liberty University to sponsor Berry car

Wednesday, April 4, 2007 10:51 AM EDT

Turn One Racing LLC is proud to announce that Liberty University will be the prime sponsor on Stephen Berry's #71 “Liberty Flames” Monte Carlo Late Model Stock Car for the full season in the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series at the Motor Mile Speedway in Radford, Virginia.

Stephen Berry, 18, a freshman at Liberty University, began his racing career less than 5 years ago in go karts. He moved up to the Limited Sportsman Late Model class in 2005 and did so well that later that year he advanced to the Late Model Stock Car class, the elite division for the local track series.

During one of the NHL playoff games, where we kicked Tononto's backside, one of the drunk Toronto fans asked me what Nascar was, I told him it was similar to the Grand Prix or F1 of Toronto except that you could see the cars for more than 5 seconds as it went by and that the winner was on the same lap as the second place car.
You haven't lived until you have been to a NASCAR race, dodging chicken bones, waving your hat and drinking that yellow stuff that is quickly recycled while visiting the bathroom.

No you can't. It almost makes me want to lock the thread and just call it a night. That's awesome.
