Growth in the on-campus student enrollment at Liberty University and Lynchburg College kept the city’s population from stagnating since the 2000 U.S. Census.
Figures provided by the University of Virginia’s Weldon Cooper Center for Public Service shows Lynchburg’s institutional housing population - driven mainly by residents of college dorms - grew five times faster than the state average.
LU’s on-campus population was 3,200 in 2000 compared to 5,652 in 2006, an increase of 77 percent.
