LU Mountain-Side Sign Completed

UPDATED - Thursday March 08, 2007 11:41pm Reporter: Manuel Quinones Posted By: Webteam

Lynchburg, VA - Liberty University's new landmark is complete and you can see it for miles around. Thursday, Jerry Falwell, Jr. laid down the last few stones of that gigantic mountainside Liberty University logo.

The Reverend Jonathan Falwell said a prayer at the small ceremony and the Reverend Jerry Falwell spoke about how this will increase Liberty's visibility.

Rev. Jerry Falwell, Liberty University - "I am very proud of this. I have driven all over the region to see where you can see it and you can see it almost anywhere."

He's right. It's very visible. The sign is made up of about 3,600 tons of white rock, 200 tons of red brick, and hundreds of bushes

Instead of wasting money on a logo, why didn't L.U. build some center to help the poor?
It's called TRBC

Or the Center Downtown, or Elam Home, or God Parent home

But I can see the argument both ways...it was a lot of money to spend

I forgot to look this morning but as of yesterday at 5:30pm. The bottom was still not round. It better not be staying like that.

or it'll look stupid. I'll hike up there myself and push the rocks that dont belong on the road below.

take a bike...it's a great ride and mostly flat

it looks flat because the access road blocks the bottom. If you plan on fixing it, you have to get rid of that road or somehow move every rock up ten feet on the mountain

Anyone able to get us out of towners a pic?

It definitely doesn't look as good as one would have hoped. The bottom is flattened out and the top is a bit oblong. The U in LU is leaning a bit. I really wish they could have made it look a little better...

But, it is spelled correctly.

The shape of the Mtn causes it to look different from different angles...it is correct when dead in front of it at eye level...lasers were used...as for the bottom, it should look better when the shrubs are planted...if not it will be corrected, I can assure you...a lot of people have work A TON of hours on this and they wont leave it until they are 100% pleased.

another words...it's still not finished yet and wont be for some time...yall walk up there to gain some perspective...it's unreal what they had to work with.

not that you were complaining adam i was just answering some questions.

You mean you can't see if from Richmond?

Seriously, could someone provide a fairly accurate estimate as to how much that cost?

How do you get up there? Is the access road open and if so, where do you get on?

The WSET link provided a split second shot from campus but that is it. A decent pic would be appreciated by this Texan as well.

on my way back from lunch I noticed they had a couple of dumptrucks at the bottom of the logo along with a digger. I think it's pretty obvious that they read this board and realized they needed to do some touchup on the bottom.

Just drove past it where Candler's Mtn Road connects to 460. That thing is massive! It's impossible to appreciate really how large that LU is until you're right up on it.

Personally, I love it. It's really carries a sense of "you are HERE".

Park like going to bald mtn...half way up you'll see a road that veers off to the left...I wouldnt recommend taking your car or truck up there...that may cause some trouble...just walk it

I've hiked up there. If the gate is open, don't drive up. That just means they're working on it and you don't want the gate locked on you while you're up there with your vehicle. Being up close to it helps you appreciate how it will never be altered.
