This does not even come close to conveying the emotion I felt when reading this from Thursday's newspaper.
That LU sign again
I so agree with Charlsie Anderson about that eyesore on Candlers Mountain, and I don’t even live in Lynchburg.
It is so infuriating to me that I try to look the other way when I’m in the area. The whole thing has given Liberty University a bad name. It’s gotten so when I read the sports section, I’m rooting for anybody else who’s playing Liberty, and that’s not fair to the students. It’s more effort of the Falwells, initially trying to change the name of the mountain.
BILLIE CARTER
Appomattox

I've never seen an area in the country with such a large concentration of wet blankets.

I have the feeling we'll be seeing letters about the monogram for years to come. The bit about rooting against us in sports because of it is pretty classic, though.

And just for Billie Carter of Appomattox: :violin

Really it makes me happy that he (or she) finds it "infuriating". If something as insignicant as landscaping your own property can cause that kind of emotion in someone, it needed to be done.

Another fun note, in Roanoke they are talking about putting a rustic resort next to the Roanoke star on there "mountain" overlooking the city. We just put a monogram up and we get all this reaction, imagine if we tried to develop our own property......ohh the injustice haha.

You know, I was thinking about this a little more.

I don't like my neighbor's minivan. It's gold and I think it's ugly sitting in his driveway right now. Every time I see his kid come out of the house with his little league uniform on, I'm going to hope he loses his game that day.

Same logic.

You can see the LU all of the way to 501 going to Lexington.

I agree Billie Carter is going too far, but I also agree that the thing is an eyesore. It's hideous. And how is it possible that this thing is facing every direction in Lynchburg at the same time? It doesn't matter what road I'm driving on; I can almost always see it from every area of town. Even Forest isn't immune. It's like one of those creepy paintings where the person's eyes follow you around the room, except in this case, they follow you around the entire house.

How can you say it's hideous before it's even finished?

it is an eye sore........now

Its not done yet and I am sure it will look fine once its done...I don't even care about it

If we weren't the school Jerry Falwell started people wouldn't care...they may at first...but the fact JF is controversial to say the least anything he does is looked down upon

out of all the letters I have read about this whole issue in the paper only one person got my respect..they got my respect because they said, "I just am sick of Jerry Falwell, I don't like him and I don't like anything he does" or something along those lines...I think its dumb....but at least they are honest...most people try to bring God into it or whatever other crap they can pull out of their butts...but really its just their hate for Jerry Falwell the fuels their fire

This is true...
What I don't get though, is if the people hate him and the mountain, then why don't they move? Roanoke and Beford are only an hour away, Richmond is two hours. Of course, they may also be flaming liberals who threatened to move to Canada if Bush won re-election (anyone know of any that actually did?).

However, my threat to move to Australia if Hillary or Obama win in '08 still stands. I'm already applying for my passport now

true....but with that said...a lot of the people have lived here all their lives (poor people) and aren't going to move because of that....no matter what there is always going to be hatred towards Jerry Falwell and people are going to be more critical of Liberty then any other college because of that...I often wonder if things will be different when he dies....not that I am hoping for it, I just often wonder how the community will treat the college after that happens

Just wait until some drunk kids climb up there one night with some spray paint and change the L into an F! That's gonna be a funny moment!

Too bad there are a ton of kids already talking about how they want to do that.

Is that something that is actually possible? Could they do it and it actually be visible? If so LU will probably be putting some kind of guards up there or something.

Its not really that funny anyway since there are already a bunch of schools with the initials FU.

It seems that the L is about done...and the U is taking shape...I think they're going to put in some more trees after it's finished to fill it in. I actually think it looks rather nice...

Think about this...Wingate is on the Mountain, you can see it. No one complained that it ruined the scenery. Then they even started using these green floodlights so it glows in the dark. Again I didn't see any letters.

But a LU made out of natural rock...oh my!

i think it would take way to long for anyone to do it and it be visible, and to be honest, most college kids are too lazy to put in that amount of effort into planning it, buying that much spray paint, and the time of painting it.

While I can't speak to how long it would take to edit the monogram, I can say that when I was at school in the late 90's that many students would take hours to paint that rock that was on campus only to awake to a different design on it when they went to class. I imagine that the monogram would take more than a night of spray painting though...

well considering you would either have to move the red rocks at the bottom of the L or paint them white enough for red not to shine through, and that thats about 15 feet wide and 100 feet long worth of rocks. Plus putting FU up there wouldnt be that funny. im more amazed at how so many kids on campus are genuinly peeved that "Jerry put that crap on the mountain". I just hate it when people complain about something when they A) have no intentions of doing something of changing it, b) when asked about it didnt voice their opinion before it was put up there and c) they already spent the money and are about done with it, and so even if they had done a or b, they arent going to deicide to undo it

The only way it will look good is if they take out all the trees on the hill and plant grass or something. Otherwise it'll look (much as it does now) about as good as someone with a spiked haircut who's shaved an LU monogram into their head.

SJ, don't get any ideas.

eh...its not too bad...I mean would I have chosen to put that on the side of the mountain?? no...but its not terrible by any means in my opinions, which really that is all this is...our opinions...

I just am getting annoyed at how angry the town is getting....they seem to think its unique to Liberty for a college to do something like this...its not...its happening...get over it...
