...I am in the middle of my students taking a test this AM, and ask the question for 5 pts extra credit...
..Explain the significance between our nickname (Flames) and our mascot (an Eagle).

First test turned in, exactly as you guys talked about in the other thread, was a "pack of eagles are called flames." (and it was turned in by a guy)

WOW.

40% of the students in an unscientific survey answered that Flames, in fact are, a flock of eagles...
...and these students work with the athletic teams.

hahaha, this is the greatest thing ever. Who'd have thought flamefans discussion would make it on to an LU test. We need someone on this board with access to convo announcements so we can put an end to this. Do they still do birthday shoutouts in convo? Someone should do "Happy Birthday, Eagles aren't social animals therefore don't travel in packs so Flames couldn't possibly be a flock of eagles."

I did a search on Google and found somebody in Arizona that I guess did a lot of research on names for groups of birds and they said that apparently a group of eagles is called...you won't believe this...

I did have one student that got it right...
...Knowledge Aflame is the motto, hence, FLAMES
...The Eagle is s symbol of Liberty.

haha...that is awesome man....I know it seems like a dumb rumor, but when so many people say its true its hard to dismiss it....which is why I think Dox made himself look like an idiot when calling out our mascot friend....its an easy mistake to make...

regardless...how does a rumor like this start...how do any of the Liberty rumors start??

While I always aspire for truth, why is it such a big deal if they believe that. Obviously LU has done a poor job in explaining the traditions of the school. You make it sound like everyone that believes this falsehood is mentally challenged.

Yet we complain about the students' lack of school spirit. Perhaps if we could educate them on the pride and traditions of the university, then the students would take more interest...
...sounds like a topic which should be included in every freshman seminar section.

...every student has heard (probably several times) about how Jerry never gave up in the pursuit of Macel, but obviously few know the real story behind the Flames name and our mascot.

I suggested that during football. I even volunteered to go around and do a 20 minute thing on LU athletic "traditions" and explaining things.
