N&A Sunday's Lead story will be about Wards & LU

N&A will be running a story that they've been collecting info on for the last 2 weeks. There have been about 3 meetings each several hours long with all the Liberty Heads. This story should be very interesting and should take a few shots at the city for their lack of effort around the Wards area. I'm interested to see how much sensitive info that was given actually will be published...if all of it then it should be great. That opinion article a few days ago was a teaser...maybe by Ron...who knows

They were also out trying to taking pictures of students dodging cars on wards yesterday

So stay tuned...I hope this article isn't a let down

I am very much looking forward to the future letters to the editor as a result. The last few weeks have been pretty boring.

That drives me nuts. Why on earth you'd try to cross that road is beyond me. You have about a 75% chance of getting crushed like frogger.

What you may not know is that as part of getting our cars registered in the City of Lynchburg...
...is that we get dollars off the fee for each LU student we can document have hit trying to jaywalk Wards Road.

So far, ya'll have hit none...its a sad world we live in that it'll take something tragic before something is done to fix a problem.

Alright, SJ, time to take one for the team..

Umm, no. Hitting SJ will do more damage to your car than it will him. Sparky-go out there and make us proud.

More to the Hill City
Copernicus called and had the following message: “LU and TRBC are not the center of the universe.”
I applaud the efforts, accomplishments and recognition of the management of Liberty University and Thomas Road Baptist Church. However, during the last few days (weeks) there seems to have been daily articles in The News & Advance detailing activities at the school and the church.
There are other functions in the Lynchburg area that truly affect all of the citizens and that go without acknowledgement.
One example was the international “Red for Women Day” that occurred last Friday. Many women - and men - wore red that day to call attention to the seriousness of heart disease in women. A number of local organizations highlighted this with gatherings, displays and presentations to make more people aware of this personal threat. None of the events was covered in The News & Advance.

they'll get over it. you would think they would figure out that LU and TRBC aren't the center of the universe, but they are the center of lynchburg

lynchburg residents confuse the heck out of me...what do they really expect to happen when you have one of the fastest growing colleges in America in your city??? The city does very little to help the school. and if they do the residents will be so angry....back when UVA and Tech and these major schools were growing to what they are now were the towns they are in like this?? I really would like to know...I know its common for residents of college towns not to completely enjoy the college because of partying and such...but this is freaking Liberty...yes there is some stuff that happens off campus, but for the most part the students don't do anything to bother the citizens...if anything they should be happy its not some state school where drunk college kids is common...

wow...that was meant to be a short reply and it turned into a rant...sorry about that

Liberty has the reputation of our noses being bent up in the air.

That all stems from Dr. Falwell. Do I agree? No. But because of Dr. Falwell's tendancy to insert his foot into his mouth on a number of situations, it's left a bad taste in some peoples mouths. Most of them reside her in Lynchburg.

Very true....but its not just Dr. Falwell they talk about...its like any little thing they can find they will write into the editor and complain about it....noise on campus from football games, student drivers (like anybody in this town should talk) and anything in between...its just kind of crazy...

I understand why people don't like Dr. Falwell...sometimes I wish he would keep his mouth shut, but I think he is a good man and Lynchburg is probably lucky to have the Falwell's in their town....

Also think of all the good the students at liberty do for the community...I know that christian service is forced upon us and all of that...but a lot of good does come from it...students help out with so many different organizations around this city....but i guess that doesn't matter...oh well, so be it i guess

TD he doesnt put his foot in his mouth any more than anyone else in the public spotlight, but with him being a religious leader it just gets blown up. Every rock thrown at LU isnt b/c of a foot being in the mouth, it's with being a religious leader.

In the meeting Doc said he's going to put up a sign on the bridge that LU/TRBC had to pay for saying "This was paid for by your tithes and offerings, and no govt money" He said a few things in there I hope make it...but I doubt they will b/c it's pretty sensitive info

Sure. I don't agree with all the flak he gets, some he does deserve -- some he doesn't. You probably conveyed my point better than I did. The majority of hatred that is spewed toward this university is due to the fact that he isn't afraid to hold back what he believes in and in our politically correct society, that is a "no-no" in their eyes.

LoL...yeah, that's fine...Doc's very clear when he says something that something is to be off the record (rare) but its funny, others in the meeting will say...hmmm, I dont think that should be in there...and he's pretty much like "well it's true though"

sometimes JF says things he probably should not and some lynchburgers just do not like him or the ministry, but the burg would be nothing but a cow town if LU was not here.

yeh...but then again Lynchburg would prob. have a lot more moonshine since the Falwells wouldnt be making money off LU

ya gotta pay the bills

just when did Lynchburg lose "cowtown" status?

Posted: February 8th, 2007, 4:13 pm
by El Scorcho
Sometime between the Fall of 1997 and now. That's when I arrived in the 'burg and it's much less of a "cow town" then when I got here. It still has a long way to go if the goal is to build a metropolis, but I'll certainly take 2007 Lynchburg over 1997 Lynchburg any day.

97 Lynchburg: Wards Road in front of campus only had Wal-Mart and Sam's Club.
07 Lynchburg: Wards Road has basically any store you want/need in a town.

87: It was a lot of dirt, some trees, and weeds. you were past it in 30 seconds when heading out of town

It had soccer fields that we used for TRBC youth leagues.
