WSET wrote:Investigation into LU's handling of sexual assault reports complete; what comes next

LYNCHBURG, Va. (WSET) — Liberty University's investigation into the way it handled reports of sexual assaults and Title IX violations is complete.

LU launched the investigation after 22 Jane Does filed a lawsuit against the university in July 2021.
And here is the statement from the administration:
"The Title IX independent review was completed and the results were shared and well received by the Board of Trustees. Liberty’s program is generally in compliance but recommendations for improving beyond what the law requires were made and all of those recommendations have been accepted. The Sexual Misconduct policy was also revised. There has been a department reorganization and re-alignment for the personnel engaged in Title IX work. This includes university authorization to hire additional staff as well as an overall increased budget for the department. The department will also be relocated with visibility at the Montview Student Union. Many other recommendations have been implemented and a University task force is overseeing the ongoing implementation of the rest.”

So the obvious questions are who conducted the "independent" investigation and what were the findings that the board found so "well received"?

Sounds like they want to project that they were meeting the bare minimum of what the law requires, which would avoid culpability, but the committee gave them recs that are more in line with best practices rather than the bare minimum.

"Generally in compliance," - in other words, there were some mistakes made. I am with Sly, who did the investigation, what were the actual results, and what was recommended?

They appear to be doing a complete reorg on compliance. There are new job postings and some folks apparently were moved.

What would be the downside in announcing who did the review/audit?

I recognize with pending legal lawsuits, there should be some discretion in regard to the contents that could be used against the school. But revealing the investigators would build some significant credibility where frankly that is in short supply.

Perhaps this is preemptive damage control. The word leaking out from the DOE investigation is LU will be clobbered with a staggering number of Cleary Act violations.

As Stokes said, “avoid culpability.”
