With the football game at night, it does change up how we will be planning our weekend. And the lack of home games for our other sports this particular weekend is disappointing. We have always loved working in volleyball, soccer, etc. Anything else going on around campus or in the area that we should be factoring into our plans?

yes but it's D "1" or "2" or "3" as opposed to "I", "II" or "III"

important distinction

Definitely planning on the football game. probably going to the Friday night hockey game for a bit then heading downtown. will probably go to band practice Friday afternoon and Saturday morning before touring the campus and the parade

This year is the first time homecoming has been a night game since the VMI comeback in 03

Yeah, we are in ACHA and we added the Division 1 squad as our top team a couple of years ago, if memory serves me right. We have D1, D2 & D3 mens teams and D1 & D2 womens teams. The top schools in ACHA tend to be smaller brand names to most than in the D2 & D3 ranks.

As for Homecoming, we plan on hitting up an orchard or two and possibly heading to the D-Day Memorial in Bedford. Any other family-friendly suggestions for early fall around Lynchburg?

Probably not what you are looking for, and I don't know if it will be open in October... The safari park near Natural Bridge / Lexington is a red neck wonder. Feeding camels and emus from out your car window is hilarious.

We have done Amazement Square and sadly it takes quite a childrens museum to impress my big city kids. But it is an awesome attraction for a town the size of Lynchburg. We have talked about the Natural Bridge wildlife drive-thru in the past but we just did Yellowstone Bear Country a couple of months ago. Natural Bridge itself is actually an option we have considered along with the Stonewall Jackson tour.

With a night game against Coach Rocco, we have more time than normal on Saturday morning to explore. The last couple of times we have used it for Poplar Forest (a highly under-rated experience) one year and then re-enactments at Appomattox Courthouse another. I suppose Monticello is in play this time around unless something else pops up. Trips to the orchards are always a huge hit with my crew. I'm disappointed that Homecoming is a week or two early to really have great color on the Blue Ridge Parkway.

I don't know if "big city" causes kids to not be interested in something like Amazement Square. When we moved out here from California, we had fun there, and that was coming from a place where we had annual passes to Disneyland. I just think some kids might be different and not into that.

As far as the Safari. I would definitely do it.

We went back in June and it was a blast.

We did the wagon ride. I didn't have to worry about animals attacking my car and they gave us a bucket of feed. You just really have to watch out for the camels. They will take your bucket out of your hand and eat it whole if you're not careful.

yeah my kids are vets of NYC and Philly and I'd hardly compare some cow-town in TX to that

and they loved both Amazement Square and the Safari

just more cactus/tumbleweed based snobbery. not surprised.

For the record, this is the hometown museum where my kids are regularly. Perhaps there is a bit of snobbery, but this museum is typically rated as the top kids museum in the country. But Amazement Square is really cool.

We're looking for experiences that we can't get down here in Texas. Those tend to lean toward outdoor activities and history. The latter is sorely missing most places in Texas since nearly everything here has been built in the last 40 years.

Yes. I'm gathering D1 is a misnomer. Good marketing though

Again, clever branding. Considering I and 1 et al are interchangeable. 'Its got Sony guts'

And what I sell off sets what happens if your partner is on the little blue pill

You could visit Red Hill, the last home of Patrick Henry. It's about an hour outside of Lynchburg.

My son did a report on Zachary Taylor ... the homechooled President of cherries & milk fame. So we are considering a run up to Gordonsville for Montebello. We did Monticello on our last run to Virginia.

I remember driving by Red Hill back in the day and they wouldn't let you see much then. Is it worth the drive and time these days? On their website, it appears we miss the Living History Days by just a week.

I haven't been in years, but we took a field trip there once in school and saw nearly everything. I felt like everytime I've been, nearly everything was open. My family would go for the fireworks every 4th of July when I was a kid. I've never been to Montebello, so can't really give you any information.
