I'm not intending to irritate anyone or provoke a fight, but I feel like we just get so excited that people are paying attention to us... I don't really understand why. Either most people know us or they don't.

I realize I'll get slammed for saying this but it seems we're all just desperate for every bit of attention we get. Something seems strange about that.

It seems that most people around here think Liberty is much more well-known than it is in reality. Case in point, a co-worker of mine came over to my house earlier this week and saw my framed diploma and said, "What the heck is Liberty University. Never heard of it." This is a guy who grew up in a Baptist home in South Carolina. There are certain groups of people who know Liberty, but it's far from a national brand in any realistic sense. I assume that's the reason that every bit of publicity is played up. I'm not saying it's a bad thing necessarily, just not something you see from the schools that Liberty claims to want to emulate.

Most of the time, out here in California, people have never heard of Liberty. Even at my church, no one has really heard of it. Lately, in the last few months, as Liberty gets more national news, I have had a few people comment, but it doesn't have a ton of name recognition yet. At least where I live.

It's pretty much the same case with most private schools. When people think about colleges, the state schools and the ivy's come to mind. So I wouldn't consider it a huge negative that people haven't heard of us.... especially if our #1 priority is to educate.

Yeah but name recognition is good when trying to attract non-regional talent. Whether that comes in the form of students, faculty, athletes, etc.

I had no idea what Liberty was the first time I showed up on campus. It's becoming more well known, but it's definitely still a niche university even with the massive enrollment.

We were better known a quarter century ago then now thanks to the OTGH. But the school is working hard to change that reality.

I'm not sure about that. I started at LU in 93, coming from an SBC background in Virginia, and I had never heard of the school before being accepted and knew nothing about it prior to showing up on campus the first time.

Sly you are absolutely right. In the '70's my grandfather and then my father started to watch OTGH. That is the only way anybody heard about Liberty back then.

I actually learned about Liberty in 2006 through the OTGH. It was my jr. yeah in high school, and my dad was flipping channels. He stopped on Jerry Falwell preaching and tuned in just long enough to see a commercial for LU. That was the first I had heard about the school and it peaked my interest enough to look it up.

Following the PTL/Swaggart scandals the OTGH's presence & influence declined sharply. But in the '70s & '80s it was tough to find an Evangelical who wasn't at least remotely familiar with the school even though we had a much smaller enrollment and practically no alumni base. Today we are having to build our awareness through new methods and have had some success through online. But there is obviously plenty of room for growth.

Athletics. One major upset or big run does more than years of grassroots efforts.
