Summary: A very popular running book, Running with the Buffaloes, turned up in Forest Middle School's library. I've read it several times and it is a really good book....except for the cursing which occurs quite frequently. Anyway, a mother is making a pretty big stink about the book's presence in the library. Running nerd forums are blowing up over this.

FWIW, I would not let allow the book in my middle school's library. It belongs in a public library where parents can monitor material of this nature.

Not necessarily, especially in light of the last sentence. You can't make broad statements like that and not expect it to be applied where you don't intend.

Okay on second thought, fair enough flamehunter. I just think the best thing we can do is try to teach our kids that neither of those things are acceptable.

Second, I realized I accidently said public library instead of school, so it might have thrown my point off. The sad part is in todo, so-called Christian parents watch shows like (name any CBS, NBC, or ABC show), so their kids are exposed to an early age all of this garbage.

When I was in Roanoke City Schools (so that's why I'm not always so intellegent), I remember numerous books I had to read in middle school that contained very vulgar things. But that was different, I was being forced to read that. If this is simply a book that any student may voluntarily pick out, then I don't see a problem. As an involved parent, you can help to monitor your child's voluntary readings by teaching him or her what is acceptable and what is not. And of course, I know all of the parents on here do that.

Well said, jbock. I agree that parents are ultimately and primarily responsible to teach them. Too many shirk that and hope that the schools and churches do their job for them.

I was speaking to the jbock's statement, which taken to its logical end would mean that porn would not be illegal. Thanks for your valuable insight though.

Taken to "its logical end" is irrelevant when there are laws in place that change the scope of the argument and would prevent "its logical end" from occurring in the first place. it's like arguing if a team from 2012 would beat a team from 1960, completely pointless and irrelevant because it isn't possible.

Let me see if I can state this so you can understand my point. I was simply pointing out to jbock that his argument was wrong because you can ban something because it makes people uncomfortable. Case in point... Pornography in schools, banned by law because we are not comfortable with our youth having free access to it.

But do you really think making it illegal bans it from happening? Exactly.

With due respect, it's a silly argument anyway. Porn and cursing are two wayyyyyy different things. Are they both wrong? Yes. Are they both sinful? Yes. Which is more frowned upon by most of society? Therefore, it is and apple and orange comparison.

Before anyone asks, "so jbock, you want kids to look at porn in schools!?" absolutely not. It should be censored, and spiritually of course it's wrong. But to equate it with cursing is quite a stretch.
