Just saw that myself. Is that money from a state tobacco settlement?

The private Lynchburg-based university intends to build the new school on land it owns nearby in Campbell County.
Where is this at?

Just a hunch but perhaps where that shopping center was originally supposed to be built.

Love this quote:
Jerry Falwell Jr., the president and chancellor of Liberty University, said he doesn’t believe the new school will compete with another relatively new medical school in Southwest Virginia, the Edward Via Virginia College of Osteopathic Medicine in Blacksburg.

“Their mission is to serve Appalachia,” Falwell said. “They serve one part of the country. Southside is our mission.”

"Our mission will be to serve underserved communities in southside Virginia. Our students are already mission-minded. A lot of them go in to medical missions already, so this gives them a golden opportunity to carry out those missions in our backyard," said Jerry Falwell Jr., LU Chancellor.

I love this quote. I was talking to a parent of a current student (a little protective of their child) who wasnt thrilled about their child going to a foreign country for a few months on a missions trip....their comment was "I love that my son is going over there to do great things but I really believe there are enough needs in America to keep him busy."

According to the New and Advance article, they are planning on it. This is definitely exciting news, I am very proud of my alma mater and the advances it has made and the current leadership for continuing the vision of Jerry Sr.

Dan Casey from the Roanoke Times did a trash piece on this.

Here was my response to Dan:

Dan –

I don’t know anything about this committee or where the money will come from, so I will refrain from commenting on that issue. However, you are wrong to state that Liberty received ANY money from the federal government – it’s students did. If I had a “Rant and Rave” blog, one of my first Rants would be reporters and commentators who don’t do their research first. Perhaps LU could offer you a refresher course.

I don't think he knows what "scam" means

One could call writing false and uproarious things to increase internet traffic and therefore increase advertising revenue a scam.

Haters going to hate 8) All Lib does is grow and continue to provide jobs and revenue to everybody in the area.

I also love when people leave out facts like that the federal government took over the student loan business so they are basically the only loans you can get (few exceptions) and that our alum have a lower default rate than the average college grad...but then again those are two pretty irrelevant facts  haters

the student loan system needs to be completely altered though. It should not be so easy to get them but this isn't simply an LU problem, and to make it seem that way is ridiculous...

awesome news on the medical school though....so crazy the things going on at LU these days

More fact checking, I'm not sure about the legal separation of LU and LU online if there is any but I don't think you can describe it as a "for-profit online university" and us keep our tax status.

100% NOT for profit....if they were they would be facing the same SERIOUS changes that Phenix and others are facing

That's the irony of the Lynchburger's argument about the LU being greedy....we can be as greedy as we want but it does not change a thing for any individuals. There are no stock holders or people that profit from our success except the students.

I read Dan Casey's blog. He is basically a liberal who hates anything conservative and Christian. He has also taken shots at our film school as well.

It is amazing how God has blessed LU. I am very proud of my school. May she continue to turn out champions for Christ.
