Everyone remembers where they were on 9/11.

I remember where I was on 9/12.

Everyone's mind was on 9/11. Emotions were running high. At convo, the convo speaker didn't even mention the events until five minutes before the end of his message (lest, you know, anyone should have to write a new sermon once in awhile).

He had been talking about how Christians need to be champions of their faith, and then finally, with about five minutes left, he referenced 9/11.

He said "if only" Christians can be devoted to our faith as much as the terrorist hijackers were to theirs.

I got up and started to walk out before being yelled at by my R.A. I didn't leave, but I didn't go back to my seat. It was the only time I nearly walked out of convo. At the time, I had friends and family and family of friends who lived and worked in New York, many of whom commuted to NYC via the PATH train that ran under the South Tower. I hadn't been able to contact all of them; as far as I knew, they were dead. Burned alive. Maybe even still trapped underneath the rubble, struggling to survive.

I could not believe that a convo speaker could be so insensitive. I could not believe that a convo speaker, on 9/12, challenged us to be like the terrorists. I could not believe that he wanted us to have the 9/11 hijackers as role models for our faith.

That convo speaker was Vernon Brewer.

I feel sorry for those students who have to sit through his slop.

No, main convo. Falwell normally spoke on Wednesday's, but he was out that day. Brewer was a guest speaker.

Please don't take this the wrong way and and me as being insensitive, because I don't mean it to come across that way; but maybe I'm missing something. First let me say I know nothing about Vernon Brewer and I don't know anything about his message that day. I wasn't there. I was still in High School. But am I missing what's so bad about what you say he said? The terrorists were being obedient to their Scripture. In my opinion, the "Peaceful" branch of Islam that the media says there are more of, are just the one's that aren't devout to their Scriptures.

Also, I do know that there are somewhere over 2.1 Billion "Christians" in the world. If we were all faithful to the Scriptures, and followed what it says (Let me remind you, it doesn't call us to kill infidels - it calls us to love, and to go and baptize in the name of Jesus, and to make disciples), wouldn't this world be a different place? If 2.1 Billion Christians were radically sold out to Jesus, radically obedient to God's word - what would this world look like?

Is that what he was saying? Because if it is, then I agree. If were as faithful as they are, this world would be turned upside down.

I'm not being a jerk. I'm asking a serious question. Does anyone know why we still have a baccalaureate service at LU?

We had one at my high school, but that's because it was public & we couldn't have religion in our graduation ceremony.

Since LU is a Christian school, we do have that during graduation...so the baccalaureate seems a little redundant, perhaps?

Well, I'll be a jerk AND insensitive...Liberty4Life, you're being way too touchy and sensative about this. There's nothing wrong with what he said, and he's under no obligation to talk about the attacks. I mean, what the heck did you want him to say? I didn't find anything disrespectful from the speaker from what you described.

I have no problem with Brewer I just think it sort of stinks that they picked a speaker that most of the seniors have already heard multiple times already. Doesn't make a lot of sense to me.

LU is celebrating its 40th anniversary, and wasn't Vernon Brewer our first graduate of LBC? It makes sense to me.
