Lynchburg, VA - Liberty University students could have a bridge sooner rather than later to make crossing Wards Road safer.
Lynchburg's City Manager Kimball Payne says the city and school have come to a conceptual agreement on what this bridge would be. It would span across Wards Road near Sam's Club. Liberty would be responsible for building and maintaining the bridge.

And who gets to make sure people actually use it?

people will use it. Great idea. Now the city needs to step up and instiall nice sidewalks gong all the way down to kohls.
In my humble but accurate opinion, Mike Gillette is a Liberty hater. He would be off of council had it not been a three way race last time. I think the bridge should have some kind of sign that says Liberty University. The one below from Mary Washington looks nice. No matter what the facts show, Gillette will never admit how much Liberty adds to Lynchburg.

Marshall University also has a very attractive looking pedestrian bridge--with school logo--that crosses 4 lanes of traffic on 3rd Avenue (see link for pic): http://tiny.cc/8o5j4

The only difference is those cities embrace their colleges, Lynchburg does not.

SIU has a pedestrian bridge. There's no logos on it, but it's functional. No need to get greedy here, in my opinion. Baby steps.

Welcome to Lynchburg, Home of Liberty University
Possible phrase to make both parties happy?

Maybe I'm being rude here, but I'm sorry, do we need to paint our logo everywhere in Lynchburg?

One thing to remember here is that Liberty is not the one that brought up any mention of signs or logos. Mr. Gillette brought it up to preempt the idea coming from Liberty. JLFJR mentioned in the N&A story that it is not an issue as far he's concerned. I think it speaks to the level of disdain he (Gillete) has for the school. And Mr. Johnson on the council is not even sure they should spend money on the bridge. I guess until a student is mowed down and killed, it won't be worth the money to him.
If they put anything on it I would suggest "Welcome to Lynchburg - Home of Liberty University".

I was unaware that there is still any doubt that Gillete hates Liberty. Very nice man...great family...he simple despises Liberty. Perfect example of someone unable to step away from emotion and make an unbiased decision.

Why does he hate Liberty? Do we know? How can we win him over?

If the council votes against the bridge, and a student gets killed crossing the road. Can the city be sued? By both the family and LU?

Probably not. Usually you'll have governmental immunity. But I don't know what Virginia Law is regarding that.

Not really the religious type and an academic elitist pretty much sums it up.

Really? A academic elitist? Come on man. That is just pathetic.

After Liberty's behavior at that town council meeting last year, I can't really blame him.

It was an issue long before then.

If this is the guy, I found his CV on Google: Ph.D. from Brown and used to teach at Wheaton, RMWC, MCV, Tufts, and Brown.
sweet. should be done in september. awesome. now the question is when will liberty build that accompanying tunnel to the bridge, so we can feasibly walk to wal-mart and stuff instead of drive?

Does it matter? Students could feasibly walk to the dining hall but they drive
