Ranch Road BBQ

I just found a new bbq joint on Lakeside that has only been open about 3 weeks. It's in the old Rivermont Dry Cleaners building. Their meats are baby back ribs, pulled pork, beef brisket, turkey, chicken, and sausage; their sides are creamed corn, baked beans, cole slaw, mac & cheese, potato salad, and a tomato/cucumber/onion salad.
Sandwiches range in price from $4 to $5.45, plates are $8.45-$9.45. A full rack of ribs is $16.95. You can also buy meat by the pound ($10-$12). They also sell family packs ranging from 2-6 pounds of meat with sides.
The dining appearance if that of a cheap NC bbq joint--concrete floors and picnic tables inside the restaurant. Has anyone else been? It's pretty close to Lynchburg College and the newspaper office.

I heard it was mediocre.

I hope it's better than Pok-E-Joe's is now. Went there Saturday. I ordered the 1-meat plate. Not enough meat to even make a friggin' sandwich, much less fill the plate. No drink & it was still $10 for that? No way. Not anymore.

blwall, for what Ranch BBQ may lack in quality, they make up for in QUANTITY. We only had the sandwiches, but both the pulled pork and the brisket were both over ONE INCH thick in meats.

Soul Brothers up in Amherst is the best BBQ around!! They are only open W-Sat but the ribs are incredible!! It is up on 29 N just before you get to the Winton/Wintergreen Turn Off. I will have to give this Ranch Road BBQ a shot.

It took awhile but I finally made it here.
The pork is very spicy and I liked it.
The brisket was VERY moist and tender. Adding the sauce helped!
The sausage was nothing special.
Now a word about the side dishes: HOLY FREAKIN COW!!! I can't decide if I liked the baked beans, mac and cheese or the cream corn, yes I said cream corn, the best. The best side dishes in a BBQ joint around.

Purple, you ordered all THREE meats?!?

And still have room for sides?!?
Oh, and Sly, they slice the brisket right in front of you.

Thanks for the clarification, CJ. I hope that sausage was beef.

Cider - I sampled!! Actually I went brisket and brought some sausage and pork home. This allowed me to LOAD UP on the sides. They were that good!
SLY - The sausage is a keilbasa. Not a favorite of mine. BUT when mixed in with the baked beans (homemade) it really was great!

Kielbasa is for eating on a bun at tailgates .... not served up with 'cue. They need to get a connection in Elgin, TX or to Earl Campbell or Bum Phillips' operations. Beef sausage accentuates the finer nuances of the brisket.

Got Mrs. Cider a POUND of brisket the other day. She was in Texas heaven!

How were the sides?
I am waiting for Secret Agent Archer to give his review.

Mrs. Cider HATES their sides. "How can they mess up cole slaw?!?", she said.
She also didn't like their mac & cheese. And I didn't dare bring her home creamed corn. Most Texans (even women) are mostly meat eaters.

You say that like it is a bad thing. And we Texans are even more finicky than that ... we want beef.

Didn't like the mac and cheese?!?! Wow. I didn't have the slaw so I can't comment.

Yesterday, I had the pork plate with mac n' cheese & baked beans. The BBQ wasn't bad. I had to add a touch of apple cider vinegar to it when I got home. The sides were great. I have no idea why Mrs. Cider didn't like the mac 'n cheese. I'm normally not a m&c kind of guy, either.
And the Texas beef brisket? Never understood it. Take an average cut of meat & cover it up with some zingy sauce? Pulled pork is different. If you do it correctly, it doesn't really need sauce.

I agree. The best pulled pork needs nothing else. With the brisket, did you try any of the 'homemade' sauces? I am thinking of heading there for lunch today to try the ribs

You all are making me hungry... Gotta try this place...Love good brisket.
Best BBQ place I have to been to in some time, has to be Q-Barbeque in Richmond. Get their made-to-order hush puppies as a side.

If you're going to travel the 2 hours to Richmond, I rather travel 2 hours to Raleigh. Better selection. Better BBQ.

You've never been to "Q" then. Tuffy Stone, the chef, is a regular on TLC's Pitmasters and has won over $125,000 in BBQ contest all over the country. You got to try it... It's Midlothian and there is a new one in Hampton.

My WV dad gargles with it, and my Maryland aunt drinks it to lower her cholestrol. I use it in my SC cole slaw recipe.

For the record, if brisket is done right it doesn't need sauce either. Paging Rubber Mallet.
