LYNCHBURG -- It looks like Lynchburg did a lot of growing in the last 10 years.
Over the past decade, the city’s population shot up by nearly 16 percent, marking its first growth since 1980, according to new U.S. Census data released this week.
Between 2000 and 2010, the city packed on an additional 10,299 residents, bringing its total population up to 75,568.
In raw numbers, Lynchburg was the fifth fastest-growing city in the state. It was seventh fastest in terms of percentage change.
The last time the city showed population growth was in the 1980 census, which was conducted after a major annexation that doubled the city’s land mass. Population figures shrank in both 1990 and 2000.

And if its that counting college students, doesn't LU have about 10,000 more students on campus now than in 2000?

LU resident enrollment grew by about 7500 during the decade. About 2/3 or 5000 of those live on campus. About 2/3 of the 2500 students who live off campus live in the city. Since many LU students stay in Lynchburg, I would estimate that 80% or more of the city's growth is directly related to LU. The city probably did have some non-LU growth because of Wyndhurst.

I sit here with the TV on at night (usually CSI re-runs) but I find TV to be extremely boring so I end up surfing the internet with the TV as background noise. I have gotten private messages tonight asking for invites to the annual Super Bowl party at my house. I cancelled the annual Super Bowl party for students at my house this year because I have been a big Packer fan since they won the first two Super Bowls in the 1960s. My intention is to actually watch the Super Bowl this year!

TV going on here as well- switching between the Billy the Exterminator marathon and Top Shot.
If you need to get away to watch the Super Bowl in peace consider this an open invite to Casa de Medic.
A short 6 hr drive to SE PA but I have plenty of Juicy Juice and Ritz crackers.

What are these shows, you're talking about? I guess I need to watch more TV.
As for Wyndhurst, I believe LU has helped there as well....quite a bit. That's just an unscientific observation from being there as much as I am.

It is tough to quantify, but the number of LU alumni who stick around Lynchburg after their academic careers are over has to play a significant role in the growth by even the most cynical NewsAdvance.com comments section analyst.

Agreed about Wyndhurst, I lived there my last year of grad school. There is a great amount of LU kids in that part of town.
