Alright, I want to hear you folks opinion on this. I was remarking to a friend at work today about how glad I was for the 'Burg business community that the students were back. He then remarked: "yea, right along with the congestion and traffic problems they cause". We went back and forth, and he actually thinks Lynchburg traffic (Esp. Wards Rd.) is "Very Bad". Does any one else think this is a joke. To me Lynchburg "traffic" is easy even at the worst. I've been all over, and I'll say this is nothing. I spend quite a bit of time in and around Atl. and I can't take Lynchburg "traffic" seriously. Thoughts?

Wards Road has some congestion but I would hardly consider it real traffic. The traffic problems in Lynchburg are primarily the awful on ramps on the old 29.

There is some traffic congestion in the sense that you can't always get up to the speed limit in the Wards/Candlers area. And in certain spots at certain times, it can be fairly annoying. But it's not even in the conversation when compared to NOVA/DC/Maryland. Or really any city bigger than Lynchburg, which is a lot of cities. There's a difference in being backed up on an off ramp for an extra 5 minutes MAYBE, vs I commute 10 miles to work so I have to leave an hour and a half early.

My first day driving to my job in Roanoke from the Burg on 460, and once I hit the Roanoke county line I began thinking "Why do people complain about traffic in Lynchburg?" Truthfully 460 in Roanoke isn't that bad either at rush hour, it does move when the lights are green haha.

Traffic in Lynchburg/Roanoke is nothing compared to Richmond, Tidewater, NOVA, and other larger cities.

So is 95 S on a Sunday around noon in the Fredericksburg area. Wards road has a lot of vehicles but the straight lanes typically flow so I wouldn't really say it's bad traffic. Just my thoughts

I have no doubt things can get crowded, but it's a minor delay compared to most real cities. Lynchburg (even with all the students) is still a nice quiet slow place to live.

Tampa is an easy place to drive, even if you've never driven there. Watch a freshman attempt to get to the mall from TRBC.

yeah, i mean the traffic here is pretty bad, but from the moment I got here I thought it was much easier then avoiding the horrible drivers in the burg.

I only have one thing to say to this guy. Try going to work in downtown atlanta on a week day getting on the connector. There is no traffic problem in the burg.

I have heard horror stories about traffic in atlanta...I will stick with tampa

When I first moved to Atlanta, I made the mistake of going through town on a Sunday when the Falcons were playing. I quickly learned to appreciate the perimeter -- and learned when NOT to try to go through or around town at all.

People will always complain about traffic where they live/work. People around HERE complain about traffic, and Sly can tell you -- there IS none. Rush hour lasts ten minutes, but people still complain about it.

Coming from NJ i agree with this completly. Also many old people need to be re-tested as well.

Have your paper do a poll of the the locals. Ask them what's the speed limit on Timberlake. I'm willing to bet that over 90% of them will say 35......even though there's big freakin' signs with a "4" & a "5" on them.

Or how about 501 right before Billy Craft Honda? Sure, it drops to 45 a little before you get there, but people think that at the light it drops to 35. NO! It does not drop to 35 until after the next light.

Perhaps a literacy test for the locals would provide more insight.

I felt that way when i got to the Burg. In atlanta as well as DC at least people drive with some sense of urgency to get where they need to go. the flow of traffic (when it actually is moving is much better than when you are behind some yayhoo in the speed lane doing 10 under.

Thankfully i hit the connector at 5:45 am in the morning every weekday 15-30 min before everyone and their mothers brother get on the road. Its heaven driving down a 5 lane highway that is normally a parking lot with noone but the semi's for company.

Hopefully it's better than the time I drove through it at 1:30 in the morning in the rain when it was like a freaking lake. I still hate you for making me do that.

I agree. It's not really the traffic. I'm used to NOVA traffic, which, when moving, requires at least 10 over the posted speed limit and the encouragment to break at least half the driving laws, without penalty. L-burg though has terrible drivers (many students and the rest locals), not to mention the road infastructure is terrible. The poorly timed lights, the bad sensors, the terrible signage, hobos who burn down bridges and a city without the budget to fix it for two years (Kemper Street), the "it's really only five minutes away, but with the roads in L-burg it will take you 15 miles and 15 minutes out of the way." It really is a joy.

Don't get me started on the lights, especially on Rivermont. It somehow takes like eight minutes to go the two miles or so from the Boonsboro Kroger down to Norfolk Ave., mostly because you hit all five of those lights without fail.

Whatever you chose to big guy. and I can't help that you just so happened to drive through on the worst Rainfall we've had in 50 years. the entire atlanta area was a lake that week.

I dunno what Lynchburg's WORST rain ever was, but we had some prett heavy rain a few days ago. It washed out Wards Ferry Road. CVCC was letting out the same time. Now that was a traffic headache. At least this one had a reason though and wasn't just a NOVA/Baltimore bottleneck or the dreaded rubberneck. Though when an accident happens in Lynchburg I'm pretty sure half the town shows up just to watch, since there's not much else for the local population to do.
