So while I was in Iraq I participated in a lot of sports events and learned I want to head in the coaching/sports management career path. I'm already in my senior year and it's too late to change my degree now (can't afford that). I realize I'm going to have to start on the bottom volunteering at local youth sports associations and work my way up. This thread is me looking for help/guidance from anyone that knows of associations in the Lynchburg area that I can volunteer to help out coaches with whatever I can/observe and learn and work my way up from there. I'm going to get my Masters through American Military University in Sports Management and get a certificate in education and hopefully one day be a coach at a High School. For those of you still reading this thread I'm impressed Anyone that knows someone I can get in touch with to get my foot in the door and start heading in the right direction PLEASE PM me. Thanks!

Some depends on what sport you're interested in. I'm guessing it's football.

Right now I'm not picky. I'll take football, baseball, or even soccer. Whatever I can find I'll take. But football would be my number 1 pick.

Start volunteering. Places like the Y always need coaches, and you'll get a few months of free membership for helping. Also, try some of the private schools in the area, they need coaches. But if you coach at a school, many times they want you to be certified (I forget what the certification is called, but it's to protect the school from coaches doing bad things to the athletes).

Okay thanks! I'll check the Y tomorrow and then look online for any private schools that might need help.

talk to middle school coaches and ask to volunteer, maybe even high school coaches and start out with the 9th grade/JV team.

I know LCA doesn't require certifications for coaches, b/c I coached tennis for them my freshman year at LU, so you may want to talk to them. If you're interested in grad school, talk to the athletics people to see what's available for GA positions.

Many Christian coaches are always looking for coaches, paid or non paid. Look for one in your area or where you plan to live.

Honestly how I got into coach basketball girls, HS , was I went to a holiday tournament and saw a team whose head coach had no ideal of what to do. I called and offered my help and was an asst coach, but basically doing all the coaching including the head coaches, ran the practices, selected the offense and defense. I had him do the paperwork, fill out the roster, talk to the officals. Made the game changes and ran it by him and everytime my advice was followed. First year at another school, offered my help to be the asst coach and the head coach left for a secular advertising job in about two weeks. Was thrown feet first into a head coaching position with no experience, finished the year 10-13 and beat a team ranked 4th in the state. My high school team had five varsity player, only two with experience and my bench was the jr high team, two best players off the bench was 7th graders playing for the first time ever. Both were very good players.
