Hearing Doug Oldham in concert played a part in my coming to LU back in the 70s when he was in his heyday. There have been and are better voices out there, but I'm not sure there has ever been a better communicator. I can't think of anyone quite like him (although I think I do a pretty spot-on impression of his rendition of "We've Come this Far by Faith". My favorite was his testimony song "Thanks to Calvery I don't Live There Anymore." Did he manipulate peoples emotions? You bet he did; but it broke down barriers of resistance, and opened a lot of peoples hearts to the gospel.

Best comparison I can think of would be Robert Goulet.

And for our younger set, Doug is the primary one being parodied on dcTalk & TobyMac with the "Is there anyone here from Shelbyville?" guy.

I don't think that DC Talk is applicable to the "younger set" anymore. I hope you feel adequately old now.
