As the Tulsa World’s classical music critic James Watts recalled in his story, “Carson announced he would play ‘I’m Getting Ready to Leave This World,’ and promptly launched into a full-blown Southern gospel rave-up, sounding a bit like Jerry Lee Lewis playing at a tent revival … It was a performance that got the crowd on its feet, got the Philharmonic practically cheering in delight, and left Hamlisch just about flabbergasted.
