Homecoming 2010

I am trying to set up plans to bring the whole Sly Fox crew over to Lynchburg for Homecoming. Unfortunately I have not been able to locate a schedule of events surrounding the festivities. Since I have to make a ton of logistical plans to pull off the trip including being home so my kids can be at school on Monday morning (non-negotiable according to Mrs. Sly), I could really use more details. Since I know so many of you are aware of events tied directly to your worlds, I'd love to see if we could compile our own calendar of events. Here is what I know so far:

Thursday, October 7th:
  • All Day - Registration Begins

Friday, October 8th:
  • TBA - Div I Mens Hockey vs. Oakland University

TBA - Div II Hockey vs. Life University

Saturday, October 9th:
  • TBA - Homecoming Parade

12:00 pm - Mens Soccer vs. High Point

3:30 pm - Football vs. Charleston Southern

7:00 pm - Womens Soccer vs. Winthrop

TBA - Volleyball vs. Coastal Carolina

TBA - Div I Hockey vs. Oakland University

TBA - Div II Hockey vs. Life University

Outside of Homecoming, the golf team has the Frank Landrey Invitational at Spring Creek on the Tuesday & Wednesday before the main events. Golf is at UVa on Tuesday the 5th on the same night that Volleyball hosts Radford.

PS - Please hit me up by PM if you have hotel promo codes that could keep me from dumping way too much into my stay.

Maybe a Winter discount Is Coming your way at the Hilton Garden Inn.

I hear their rates are $159 a night before taxes  Save your pennies or don't, but either way they will definitely be full for Homecoming and probably all five home games. If you post here and happpen to stay at the HGI, the morning guy Andrew is pretty cool. Be sure to say "Hi" and mention me, WinterIsComing, and watch him be startled, smile, and then start denying knowing what you're talking about.

Then again, he owns three season tickets and has asked off for all the home games, so maybe he will have those weekends off...Oh, dear God, please give me...I mean him, those weekends off!

How much of a discount will a state employee get at the HGI?

Rates for Fed employees is usually $83 and State $125.10. But they aren't available on all dates and there is a 6 room a week limit for both. I'm not sure if they are available those weekends or not, and many hotels have done away with those rates altogether because it is such large discounted rate that it affects the "rate-integrity", fancy term for charging guests alot of money. The HGI may also end up doing away with those special rates in the near future...or maybe not. No final word as of yet.

I'm planning on heading into town as well. Taking my 2 1/2 year old to his first non-high school football game should be interesting. Does anyone know if they are planning a race on campus or on the mountain that morning?

Any one know the time of the hockey games on Friday and Saturday?

According to the hockey website, both D1 hockey games are at 7:30. no time for the D2 games listed that I can tell but my gut feeling is theyd both be immediately following the D1 games

In that case I will only stay at hotels that do offer the rate, or take my preferred option and stay at a friend's house, haha.

Can't say I blame you. A friend's house usually always includes the complementary pillaging of the fridge, freezer, and pantry. I always find that enjoyable.

If we make it down this year, we'll be staying at the fabulous Casa de Inlaws once again. Not a five-star resort, but the price is certainly right, and often comes with complementary dinner.

OK, first of all it is well established that I am a cheapskate. So with that as a foundation, am I nuts to book homecoming reservations at the Kirkley Hotel? Through Hotwire I can book a room for $46/night. That's right at half what I can score a room at the Wingate which is the only other real option with everyone else already figuring out that it should significantly bump up rates that week.

I used to DJ in the club back in the day when the Kirkley was called the Lynchburg Hilton. But that was a long time ago.

I'm probably going to book a room fairly quickly so I am looking for somebody to either talk me out of it or make me feel better about booking. TripAdvisor & most of the major travel sites actually give the place decent ratings for such an old hotel.

What do you guys think?

It's where the football team stays so you'll have the groupies over there on Friday night but other than that, it's a nice hotel. I don't know about the rooms but the banquet areas are pretty nice and updated.

Thanks. I haven't been in there in over two decades so I had no idea how it would be inside.

Just booked a room from 10/6-10/10 at Kirkley Hotel via Hotwire for $46/night. Total after taxes is $214.99 if you are looking for yourself.

My parents stayed at the kirkley just this past year when they surprised me with a visit. The rooms are nice and SJ's spot on with the lobby and banquet area being very good looking.

My parents did the same for graduation. I like it just as much as the wingate.

Right now I'm holding my breath hoping we can get down for homecoming. My daughter may have a performance that day, and I don't miss those. If we can't make Homecoming, we'll be down for another game later on.

Nice catch, jcmanson.

Are they going to hook the alumni & their families up with ice skating or Snowflex? Skating in LaHaye is a big deal for my little ones.

And will there be a Flames Club Luncheon during Homecoming? If so, I am down.

Nearly completed our travel plans for the trip to Lynchburg.

Really disappointed that once again the Flames Club Luncheon is not occurring during Homecoming. I get why they want to have it the week before to show off the completed stadium. But they could have a much bigger crowd with the alumni in town the next Friday. Two years ago the luncheon was one of the highlights of our trip.
