I have no direct knowledge, but I think it may be most likely that much of the future growth of the campus could possibly come in the circle where the watershed issues shouldn't be as much of a concern. Couldn't we "remodel" these dorms into larger structures thus circumnavigating the other issues? Just leave a small portion of each circle dorm to be used as part of new larger structure. I know that is how many folks build on beaches these days while facing the same type of challenges as the school.

And yes, 25k is possible. Anybody who has been at the school for any significant period of time knows not to question what God can do at LU.

I'm sure there is definitely a way to restructure the dorms to make them bigger, but big issue comes into play with academic buildings. There needs to be adequate classroom space to hold 25k and there definitely isn't that right now, which is why expanding is kinda difficult.

Thought about this last night - why can't we tear down the two wings off the back of Demoss and build them back but with the same architecture as Demoss and 4 stories high?

OHHHHHHHHHH I LIKE THAT IDEA! i no im gonna some negative comments on this next idea. but the schilling center could definately be redone and made bigger and actually have a bunch of classrooms inthere. how often are those courts in there used for BIG events. i no they ARE used but theres other places on liberty that could be usedandi think a good 3/4 of the schilling is a waste of space. i say rebuild it for something more useful.

How big do you think our engineering and to a lesser extent the aviation school will get? As of now (and things seem to be constantly changing) engineering is basically going to have a separate campus over by the intermural fields and aviation classes would be at the airport I guess. So main campus teaching space wouldn't be an issue with those colleges. Just housing. So that a possible addition of many thousands of students without touching main campus. Obviously with those being new programs it would take a while to build up numbers though.

The wooden courts are used for LU basketball practice. Men's and women's. The rest of it is used for intramural volleyball, which is a 2 semester sport. That is the only place to have intramural volleyball, and it is a BIG deal. Especially co-ed volleyball. As you mentioned, there are concerts. There were 3-4 concerts last semester alone, and as SJ mentioned in a different thread there is another one this weekend (or next weekend, I forgot). It's used a lot more than you realize. Plus all the leadership training that happens in there twice or three times a year. Whetstone on Sunday nights on an occasion.
The Demoss idea wouldn't be bad at all, but that would be a HUGE project that would potentially mess up the academic school year, because the chances of them getting a job like that done in 3 months is quite slim. Even if it was 1 wing 1 summer, another wing another summer. It would be tough.
I just remember though, that the press box will be housing a 1,000 cap. class styled room. There have also been talks of the old theatre being used as a classroom as well. There are possibilities, but expansion of academic buildings would be needed.

I was thinking about that too Pheonix. Danville would be more realistic than the other two. IMO.
I'm thinking he was just joking. Private universities don't really extend to other parts of the state like Texas, Virginia, California, etc. do

We ended up with North Campus because we turned down the offers of the "Hobby Lobby" Greens to build a second campus in Chicago. So I have to assume secondary campuses are probably still fairly low on the priority scale for our leadership. And if they did, I would expect them to take over smaller schools in cities further away from the home base.

I remember when I was a student there was a real push to have a LU campus in Japan, of course I think South Korea would be a little more realistic.

DLP already does the satellite campus thing in places such as Jacksonville and Atlanta, Fort Bragg and other military installations, but DLP is a whole different animal.

Mercer University(private) in Macon, Ga has two campuses with a third opening next fall i believe. Their atlanta campus holds all of their pharmacy school and much of their graduate degrees in engineering. I could easily see LU moving a lot of graduate programs to an alternate site like Charlottesville or Roanoke or even Richmond. IMO Roanoke would be the best idea.

You guys are turning me into a Flame Fans junky by talking about some of my favorite subjects-- like planning for LU's future. This thread reminds me of a site plan that John Borek had prepared by MMM Design Group about ten years ago when he was LU's president. This group came up with a plan to modify our old campus to accommodate 20,000 students. It included a few parking garages and several multi-story dorms but it worked---20,000 students on just the old campus without Campus East or Campus North. It wasn't very practical because it was so expensive but it was possible. Now, with Campus North (or at least the half of it that is not used by TRBC and LCA), Campus East, the future campus in Campbell County (larger than Campus North and Campus East combined) that has now been made available to us by the $4 million bridge we just built over the railroad tracks across from the airport, Candlers Station (after retail leases are no longer lucrative for us there) and all the undeveloped land along the 29/460 bypass between Candler's Mountain Road and Campbell Avenue, we have more than enough space to grow the resident program to not just 25,000 students but maybe 35,000 or 40,000 students. Even on the old campus, we have huge potential for growth at the end of Ericsson Drive. Look at the master plan we made public a couple years ago. The building planned for that site dwarfs DeMoss Hall. LU's growth may have some obstacles but none of those obstacles are due to lack of space. We just need to get the environmentalist wackos out of the way and nobody is doing a better job of turning the country against those nut jobs than President Obama. LU's future is bright!!

Yes, it's a condition we each have and are well aware of. None of us are afraid to admit it, we just haven't come up with a name for it yet. Welcome to the club.

Be careful JLFjr....it starts with a few posts and then it becomes a disease

As for reaching 25k. I dont think there is a realistic chance we DONT reach 25k. Just keep in mind, it's a process that wont happen tomorrow. LU is no longer in the position where all of the energy is having to be put towards recruitment to make sure finances are enough to make ends meet. Now LU is in the position to methodology pursue LU's future growth. This is excellent because nothing will be rushed. LU is in such a great position because taking this route will ensure longevity compared to a rush job that may reach a high number faster but will not last due to poor planning.
