Chancellor Jerry Falwell, Jr. has announced that Liberty University is purchasing an off-campus facility to house the school’s maintenance department and some divisions of field operations, including transportation. Moving the department and all its vehicles to the new location will free up to 26,000 square feet of building space for academic uses and about 200 parking spaces on campus, he said.

The 26,500-square-foot facility, owned by Young Moving & Storage and located at 400 Mayflower Drive, has a fenced-in parking lot and is less than a mile from campus — closer than River Ridge mall. The new location also puts the department closer to the Annex residence hall (formerly Lynchburg Inn).

Falwell said the facility will save Liberty millions of dollars that would have been spent on building a new maintenance facility on campus. It has also been estimated that the parking spots it will free up on campus are worth a total of $250,000 in savings for what it would have cost to construct new ones.

A contract was signed on Friday, Jan. 29 to purchase the property for $880,000. LU will close on the deal in about 30 days.

So how far is the new place from the dorm that used to be a hotel?

I am excited about this purchase. I walked through the facility today and it is enormous. The dimensions are about the same as Schilling. Even the ceiling height is the same as Schilling but it is actually a better building in some ways because it is masonry, not steel pre-fab. The owner built the facility in the 70s and has kept it near mint condition. The parking lot is fenced and will be the perfect place to park all of our maintenance and service vehicles (about 200 of them that are now parked on campus). There are two additional buildings--one very nice small office building and a 50' x 60' garage with grease pits and 14' high garage doors. We can move our vehicle maintenance shop into this second building. This property will allow LU to move all of its service and maintenance functions off campus but will keep them in very close proximity to campus. These functions are necessary but unsightly and currently occupy a lot of space on campus that we would prefer to use for academic programs. Last Friday, we convinced the owner to sell to LU for $880,000 even though he had a full price offer of $925,000-- mainly because we were willing to close quickly. I signed the contract late Friday night after Scott Starnes and Charles Spence scrambled to find a ladder to climb 40' onto the roof of the building to do an inspection just before dark and just before the snowstorm. This building is on the bus line to the Lynchburg Inn and will therefore also make an excellent location for our new welding engineering program. We had planned to spend quite a bit to build a maintenance building and welding building on campus and had even completed the site and building plans for the maintenance building. I am so glad we delayed the construction because the savings to LU by acquiring this building will be in the millions. New construction is almost cost prohibitive these days because of Virginia's silly stream and wetlands protection laws. Sorry to ramble on but it really excites me to see how God continues to bless LU with miracles like this.

It is closer to campus than the mall. That is the other reason it is so perfect for our service functions.

This property is right across the street from the AEP facility on Mayflower, at the corner of Mayflower Dr. and Young Pl.(on the other side of Young Pl is Delta Star).

This is a great acquasition for LU. I am very excited to see what God is doing at Liberty. The growth is amazing and it astounds me by what has been accomplished in the last few years. LU will always hold a special place in my heart because it saved my eternal life and hope it will save many more. With all the great things that are going on lets not forget to keep LU and all those that play a role in making this a great University in our prayers.

Agree with you on that. I get blown away thinking how God has provided for LU from the dorms on Treasure Island to today.

BTW anyway got pictures of the two story red barn on Treasure Island? My dorm room my freshman year
