Recruiting often involves a string of coincidences, which is how Houston’s Homeschool Christian Youth Association became a sudden recruiting pipeline for Liberty basketball.

w Coincidence No. 1: Current Liberty assistant coach Jason Eaker was working as the video coordinator at Texas-Pan American in the 2003-04 season. That Broncs staff recruited an HCYA athlete to UTPA’s campus in Edinburg, a small city nestled near the Mexican border.

That athlete — Thomas Sanders — eventually left UTPA for Gardner-Webb. Before the two parted ways, Eaker became tight with the Sanders family, who happened to have a few other basketball-playing members.

Great article, Chris!

:clapping

The only thing missing from your equations was the presence of Sly Jr. in the HCYA program. Incidentally, the boys have continued to play well this season even without most JC & Stephen most of the season. And the girls continue to roll along.

Lang may have missed it, but I'm sure he's on Coach Layer's radar.

Here's to hoping that Junior can jump out of the gym like SCAR and can shoot like Bailey. Probably even has a great speaking voice like his old man, too, with broadcasting in his future.
