The biggest local traffic problem — the necessity for travelers on U.S. 29 to struggle through congested areas thick with stoplights in order to get from Northern Virginia to North Carolina — was alleviated in 2005 when a long-awaited bypass was completed around Madison Heights. That dovetailed nicely with an earlier spur that took U.S. 460 traffic away from Timberlake Road.
The congestion has now shifted to Wards Road, the connection between the City of Lynchburg and U.S. 29 South. That’s the bad news. The good news is the reason for the congestion — a proliferation of restaurants and retail outlets that has transformed how Central Virginia shops.
Coupled with the explosive expansion of Liberty University, the south side of Lynchburg has become the prime high-growth area. Since the 1950s, the epicenter of retail has shifted from downtown to The Plaza to River Ridge mall. Now, it’s the four-lane highway named for Sarah Lynch’s second husband, John Ward.
