So I was watching the precinct by precinct results in the 23rd district election tonight. With all but one precinct counted Valentine led by over a thousand votes. But that one precinct was Heritage Elementary where LU votes. That precinct had over 1900 votes for Garret and around 300 for Valentine swaying the election to Garrett by less than 400 votes.

one of my friends was working with the victory center and called us about that, way to go LU

im sure i will catch grief over this, but how many students actually care about Lynchburg and what happens to it? How many of those students will actually stay around after they graduate?

Half of the kids who voted just saw the "R" and checked it off without knowing anything else.

Now on to clean up city council

i agree jon. that is what bugs me the most.

For anyone who complains that thousands of people voted for Obama just because he was black to say it's ok for people to vote for someone just because they're a Republican is completely hypocritical.

I don't like the way this whole voting thing has been done by the University, especially this year. I was fine with it last year, but I'm just really uncomfortable with the way it's been done this year.

And that's pretty much all I'm saying. I'm pretty sure it's more than I'm allowed to say since I work for the University but oh well.

To be fair, it seems quite a bit of alum are in this area, and like what was said in the "relationship between LU and Lynchburg thread" alums are building quite a bit of businesses in the area. I think more than what gets credit. Plus, alot of students actually own property in Lynchburg, and are more interested than what the avg. lynchburger would think. If I recall, doesnt SJ own a house off campbell, and I Live on Garfield, and so Im also more interested with putting revenue to clean up this area, on top of not taking Liberty for granted.

But like Rooster I think is implying, I think the purpose of having the students vote this time was partially to help in the governor race, but mostly letting the higher ups of Lynchburg know they cant neglect Liberty. Its more about the long term effects that dont matter if the students are here or not, they are helping their soon to be alma mater.

By the way, I predict JDub or Bryson post in this thread by the end of the night.

That depends on how much Convo time it got. Honestly I dont know how much time the University spent on educating the students on the voting issues. Unless you can tell me Jerry Jr. went up to a podium, said "GO VOTE, WE NEED YOU TO VOTE AND WELL GIVE YOU CLASSES OFF," and never said a word about the voting issues, candidates, and Liberty's future in Lynchburg, I'd say you feel queazy because you havent looked into the situation.

And I'd say you were wrong, and that's not the first time you've been wrong about an assumption you've made of me because I don't go to convo or didn't live on campus.

An assumption? No. My conclusion was prefaced with an IF.

Did Liberty REALLY not get enough information out there? If it's a different topic youre all upset over you probably should have mentioned your actual problem as opposed to tacking it on the end of the "hypocritiacl voters" part.

Reading the comments on here and Lynchburg news about Valentine losing. I love reading the whiners crying. Made my day.

Are you really equating skin color with political philosophy? When you vote for a Republican, you generally know what he believes and how he will govern. When you vote for the black guy, you have no indication what-so-ever what he believes or how he will govern.

Wow, I actually agree with you on this one. Not saying that LU students should've gone out and just voted for the R b/c it was there, but w/ a few exceptions you generally know someone's political beliefs based on what party they're from.

An "R" on the ballot stands for someones views on political positions. The color of ones skin does not. So how can you say that it would be the same thing? IF we would have flipped the two candidates parties in the last election and what there agenda's were would we have had the same outcome? I believe yes, yes it would have had the same outcome. So I dont agree that people that these people are not being hypocritical at all.

There is a very large span that the "R" and the "D" cover. There have been plenty of "R" people that I really didn't like or agree with but they still had "R" by their name. I was comparing voting for someone on the pure basis of a description of them (either race or political party) without looking into what they actually believe and want to do.

This is no different than the effect that living in a town with an Air Force base had. I lived near Seymour Johnson Air Force base in NC, and they had the identical effect, but to a MUCH larger degree. And yes, they pulled the R lever as well.

Look, I agree that not every person with an R next to their name is the right person for the job. As a matter of fact, I do not consider myself an R anymore. I am a conservative, and I don't have any candidated that represent me.

In this case, the R was the right person.

Every college in the area could have done the same thing thanks to the new law.

Exactly, and I'd bet the farm that there were at least 210 Democrats between Randolph, LC, & CVCC that DIDN'T vote yesterday.

No.

You know, students who voted yesterday didn't vote because the school told them to, it's because they wanted to. Every single student at LU believes that everyone outside of their social circle it a mindless zombie. It's implied on this board repeatedly. But you could apply the same characteristics to the general Lynchburg population. I would say that the LU students who voted were vastly more educated on the issues and the candidates than the rest of the Lynchburg population.

And who cares if they'll be here in a year or after they graduate. They're here now. The only thing that makes any of this a problem for people is the religious/political beliefs of the school and a majority of it's students. I would think that the best thing for Lynchburg's future is to keep as many graduates of LU (or any of its other colleges) after graduation as possible, so allowing those students to help mold Lynchburg into a place that they'd actually want to stay and live seems like a good plan to me.
