That was kind of a fun read.

So here we are, 3 years later, most of us don't give it a second thought. It's had time to "grow in" and we've seen it in all seasons. What's everybody's opinion on it?

I love the concept. It was just a great idea all around. However, I don't think it was executed all that well. The letters themselves look great. The bushes look out of place in every season if you squint hard enough to see them. The surrounding white oval, is definitely not an oval I don't care how many lasers they used. It's got one pointy end and the road underneath it makes the bottom flat. Then outside of that it's just barren dirt. It'd be nice to see some grass or something around it but then I'd guess you'd have to mow it.

I think it's funny how 100% certain we were that somebody was going to alter it. I remember probably within the 1st week it was there somebody tried, but it was a failure.

So overall, good idea, but not as pleasant to look at as it could be.

I still stand by the idea to light the Monogram red on Gameday. Days where we win it stays lit through the night. Important events at LU and other important games. Cant do it all the time so it loses the "Oh its red, what's going on up at LU" feel but enough to make people who arent following us wonder.

Here is what UT does on game day

That looks red.

What is burnt orange anyway? Is it the orange on the helmet or the orange on the jersey? Because it's 2 completely different colors.

I personally like the LU monogram, but don't the non-LU/TRBC locals still hate & curse it? (There was a nasty editorial about it in the local paper just last week).

anytime LU or TRBC is mentioned in connection with anything the locals criticize it...their lives dont have any meaning otherwise

Wow, a reference to the UT Tower. Have to admit I didn't see that coming earlier in this thread. But I like it.

:P

Burnt orange is burnt orange. It is the same color in the logo on the helmets as it is on the jerseys. Its just a slightly darker tint.

For the record, the top of the tower gets lit up for football victories. Only major victories get the top to bottom treatment in orange. The #1 in lights is reserved for national championships.

Because of the Hellboy thread and it's tragic direction, I will refrain from posting the TT bell ringer video.

BUMP

Local N&A columnist Darrell Laurant takes his mom to visit our monogram.
A message from the mountaintop
By Darrell Laurant
Published: September 26, 2010

My Mom started asking the question back in January, soon after she came down from the Adirondacks to spend what she thought would be a milder winter in Virginia. That winter gave way to spring, which then was driven from the stage by the heat of summer, and Mom was still with us, still asking.

“When are you going to take me up on that mountain?”

Personally, instead of the monogram, I would have prefered putting a garden/park up there, or maybe some trees, or maybe an observatory or academic building.

The monogram and snowflex are just eyesores in my opinion. I like the fact that we are "growing the brand", but honestly that's all it feels like, just two big tramp stamps that say LU instead of the beautiful trees that changed color in the fall and helped announce spring. They proclaimed God's beauty to me, not a big self-promotion. LU really has little taste for architecture or well maintained green open areas with trees and flowers. I envy most other college campuses based on that one reason alone.

They're working on it. Most other colleges were founded before the car was the primary mode of transportation, so having built-in green spaces was easy. Now those colleges have parking problems far beyond the ones current and past LU students whine about.

As for the observatory, there is still plenty of mountaintop left...LU just doesn't have an astronomy program...yet.

yeah, I'm always whining about the lack of turf on campus but I understand why it is. And architecture? Come on, schools with nice architectural buildings are normally 100 years old minimum. They're like that because that's how buildings were built at the time. Not because they were trying to look fancy. We may use a lot of styrofoam and stucco but that's just how things are built in 2010. I think you'd have a difficult time finding a 30-40 year old school with nicer buildings.

I wouldn't count on an astronomy program anytime soon. There's not a great deal of earning potential from those types of programs these days.
