It seems like I've heard this story three times over the last couple years, but they finally sold the golf course land to be developed for housing.

Oakwood Country Club has struck a deal to sell its golf course tract to a residential community developer in the Richmond area, the club announced Wednesday.

If the project gets city approval and pre-selling of lots goes well, East West Communities will buy the land, about 75 acres, and turn it into a “high-quality” neighborhood. The deal is expected to yield $2.5 million to $3 million for the club.

Terri Proffitt said the deal will help Oakwood Country Club pay off its debts and find better financial footing. Also, developing a residential community on site will help the club in the future, she said.

The announcement brings a conclusion to more than a year of questions about the future of the Lynchburg golf course. In January 2008, the club closed the course without firm plans for the land.
In the deal that was struck with East West, Oakwood Country Club will keep its clubhouse property and its recreational facilities, including the swimming pool and tennis courts. The club has agreed to renovate the facilities as well.

So, without a golf course, exactly what does Oakwood offer it's members? Tennis I guess, and maybe a swimming pool and a bar/restaurant? Doesn't exactly sound like something that would inspire me to pay big bucks to be a member.

No, but a lot of people are members of Boonsboro for the tennis and pool, and the parties. It's not like Oakwood's golf course was any good in the first place, that really wasn't a good reason to join.

Will be interesting to see what sort of plan they develop. I'd like to see smaller cluster or cottage homes with areas of greenspace and trails for walking/biking. We don't need a bunch more large Mcmansions or townhomes. For example

I think you can probably assume that a neighborhood of low quality housing 50 feet apart from each other is coming. Unless the Boonesboro folks band together in order to prevent such a thing as they often try to do.

it will not be low quality housing. the N&A atricle failed to mention that east west partners have developed two award winning communities in richmond called brandermill and woodlake which have nice homes with a lot of greenspace and walking trails. this will not be like the cornerstone development off greenview dr.

After looking at the East West site, I think we have a great developer who will do some things not before seen in Lynchburg. Traffic will be an issue but that's the worst aspect I can think of.
