Last year's winner Schmokies went, well, up in smoke. So this year's competition is wide open. If there are new competitors in this genre then I'll add them to the list of options.

I haven't heard of Spry's but I will definitely be checking it out.

Had to use my 6,000 post to vote for BBQ--and I chose Dickey's. But there's a new BBQ joint in Boonsboro where the Hurricane Cafe used to be. Not bad 'que, but it's no Dickeys. And I'm sorry to hear that Schmokies didn't make it: I took my pastor there for his 40 birthday years ago.

Pok-E-Joes is now an option. I used to love their chopped & sliced beef sandwiches back in the day when I lived in Austin. Curious to hear feedback from others who have been there.

Very, very good BBQ. They are an athletic sponsor here at LC and sell food at some of our games (Chic-Fil-A sells food as well). They sell sandwiches for like $3 and that was the first time I had one - I wanted to go back and get one or two more!

There's a new place I just found out about tonight. Sqealers, I think it was. I had a pork sandwich tonight at celebrate america and it was by far the best I've had around here. I was told they're located on 460 by that carwash at the corner of Turkey Foot.

Only place on the list I've actually been to is Dickey's, and I've never been impressed with their stuff. Remington Grill and Schmokie's were both better. I have to abstain from this one for now.

I didn't vote because I never ate BBQ when I was in Lynchburg. I did eat at Dickey's when I was up there for graduation this year and it wasn't very good. I'd stay away from that place.

The main reason I'd go to Dickies is because they had these amazing waffle fries that had some kind of beer batter on them. They were unbelievably good. But the last 2 times I've ordered them I've gotten what looks like Chick-fil-a waffle fries. And I like those when I'm at Chick-fil-a, but at Dickies they're just so bland. Now I don't go there anymore.

You chose a BBQ joint based on its
fries?
That's like choosing a seafood restaurant based on its
biscuits.

Well up until I tasted squealers on sunday, it was the deciding factor as all of the BBQ places around here were very average.

They were amazing. I've asked why they changed, and they said that most people didn't like them. WHAT? They were great. Now I just get Fried Okra.
We go to Dickies quite often because of the kids eat free thing on Sundays.

Yeah, Sundays is the only day I can justify the cost for a family of 4 when 2 of them eat free.

I haven't iried as many BBQ places as HMO, i'm guessing, but I second that opinion.

I can't stand Dickey's. I ended up there for lunch one day this week and was reminded of that very quickly. All of their meats lack flavor. Especially the pulled pork. And their ribs have a consistent look that's just freaky.
I have yet to make it out, but I've heard nothing but good things about Pok-E-Joes from people I trust. I'll be going there very soon. A good barbecue place in the 'burg would be amazing.

For all you Pok-e-joe fans, what's your favorite meat there? Do you just get the sandwich, or do you get the platter with some favorite side items?

They fixed everything on their menu one time for me when we were considering having them come out to the Hillcats...I can honestly say I dont think there was one thing that I did not like and nothing that was not outstanding

A quadruple negative!! I'm so confused. I think that equals a positive, right?

I know...it was really early and before coffee....I dont even know what I was trying to say.
The food was great. There, all that crap I said could be summed up to that

This is a sad state of affairs when Dickey's is leading for best BBQ. I agree with Scorcho...there is no flavor in their meats at all. It really tastes like it is cooked in an oven and not smoked.
I will definitely be looking up Pok-e-Joes a try. I am always in pursuit of good BBQ.

Indeed. But then, isn't BWW leading in wings?
I've only been to Pok-e-Joe's once (yesterday) and had the pork sandwich. Very good. The fries were pretty good--the ones that were done, at least. I've been told they also have really good mac & cheese.

One thing about Dickies that's not meat related, the bun that the meat is on is very good. It's toasted and buttery. But yes the meat is fairly bland.
