Did any of you guys know this guy? He was only on campus one semester (Spring 2007) and he is about to release a book about his experience as a liberal undercover at LU.

Kevin's Website

It has been creating some buzz in a number of circles the past few days since the advance publicity began coming out. Clearly this kid has an agenda but I get the feeling based on some of the reviews that his experience on the mountain had a surprising impression on him. Here is one blogger's thoughts ...
Reading Rants! wrote:When Brown University student Kevin Roose told his parents he wanted to attend Jerry Falwell’s Liberty University for a semester, they were obviously shaken. After all, they had raised him to be a good liberal with solid Democratic values—where had they gone wrong?! Then Kevin explained that he wanted to enroll undercover in order to write a book about what it was really like inside the cloistered world of Christian college, and they relaxed…a little. The result of Roose’s anti-secular semester sojourn is this enlightening, balanced and highly entertaining book, where he shares his experiences with dating Liberty girls (“Hand holding and hugging are the only official displays of physical affection allowed at Liberty…and hugging only for a three-second maximum”), taking Liberty science classes (one professor provides physical dimensions for Noah’s ark and explains how the animals were in a state of hibernation so they didn’t need as much food), and checking out Every Man’s Battle meetings, “Liberty’s on-campus support group for pornography addicts and chronic masturbators.” But while some aspects of Christian collage were exactly what he expected, Roose was also surprised by how honest, kind, and funny his dorm mates were, and how much they struggled with the strict rules of Christianity that they professed to completely agree with.

Here is a story that Kevin did on Doc for the Champion that allegedly was the last interview he did before he passed away.

Incidentally he has some rather surprising folks offering up glowing reviews:
“This is a brilliant book. Absolutely brilliant. Roose’s wisdom, humanity, and love kept me going. And I laughed. A lot.”

They act like it's some sort of secret society. Hello, the gates are pretty much open here, in fact, they're gone.

We've discussed Rob rather extensively on here before. My point was that it seemed odd for him to be offering a review on a book that is allegedly being marketed more to the socially liberal sector.

I dont think that is surprising, and maybe thats what Alumnus meant. Robs whole mission is to reach that crowd, as Jesus says in Matthew 9, who needs a doctor, the sick or the healthy

Yes, him and his buddy Brian McLaren's disregard for the Scripture make me sick.

Let's try and keep this about Kevin. He wrote for the Champion and sang in the TRBC choir. Surely at least one of you came in contact with him.

He looks like the kind of guy most people would avoid, especially near the showers.

It's so surprising that his roommates were funny and kind. Who'd have seen that coming?

I'm not sure I like being written about like we're some pack of gorillas in the Congo that he was able to observe up close.

It'll be an interesting read. I don't think it will be anything groundbreaking for those who have spent time on campus but might be an interesting perspective.

anyone read "i sold my soul on ebay"?

I think this book will end up being more marketable to christians than to non christians.

its a book. google it.

A northwestern grad student who was an atheist put up an ad to whoever wins to convince him against God or for God. An old pastor won it, and for a year, they went to 52 different churches. The guy offers up what he liked about each church, what turned him off, what turned him on, etc. It was an attempt to show that church goers were crazy, but has turned into a book alot of pastors use to know how to reach that sort of crowd.

I happen to like Rob Bell. (and yeah I'm as conservative as they come) but this book sounds like it could just be a money-grabber

I sent him an e-mail w/ a few questions. He wrote back with a few answers. It would be interesting to talk to him in person.

I met him when he was on campus a week or two ago. He was a nice guy, and from what I've heard the book isn't too down on LU. It seems to be mainly about the culture of on campus LU students, but does also mention the negative and positives.

Hmm, one day at Brown he met a group of LU students...thats interesting, b/c my freshman year I was on a prayer walk on Brown's campus as part of a group of LU students on a mission's trip. I wonder if it was some of the people in my group that he met...
