Genworth to lay off ~1000 employees

There hasn't been any Lynchburg news in a while.

So far Lynchburg has seemed to be recession-proof. Well, Genworth employs about 1400 in the area, so these layoffs could have big effects around here. The layoffs are global, but the company has already eliminated pretty much all open positions (nothing is open in Lynchburg), and now the cutbacks are starting.

Are you worried? I see that mainly affecting people who make a decent salary. Which rules out most of lynchburg. Middle management should watch their backs.

Yeah, I figure it's going to be mostly project people and contractors. But I've grasped the reality of no bonus this year for a while now.

It's when you go to the Schilling Center to eat shrimp and chicken fingers without sitting down.

And just so we're clear, I'm not complaining. Just having some fun. I greatly enjoy my shrimp and chicken fingers.

Haha, nice. I haven't been to one of those since about 2003. Those were some mighty fine shrimp, though.

Severance packages and forcing one to change to a better profession can be a great thing. I speak from experience.

Agree 100%. In retrospect getting laid off in 1991 was the best thing that could have happended. Moved to the West Coast, met my wife and ended up making more money with less brain damage.

Yeah, the cuts are pretty much over. Today was the big day. I came through unscaithed, but as hard as it would have been to lose a job, I was actually ready and in some ways hoping that I would've been let go. It would have helped me attain one of my new year's resolutions. Of course, it wouldn't have helped pay the bills.
But like HMO said, cuts were from top to bottom, no one was safe. Pretty much the top exec in the burg is gone. They're restructuring a lot right now, and that always means jobs are combined and people will be left out.

Is that Goings or Chartrand? Chartrand was prime for a cut rolling up everyday in his Porsche.

I won't say who, but I don't know about your old boss.
