The city is weighing a proposal to expand Liberty University’s vehicular tunnel project by building an additional tunnel at public expense.

The project, if approved, would be part of a greater undertaking aimed at connecting Wards Road and U.S. 460 via the school campus.

Full details are not yet clear. City Council plans to discuss the matter further in January. LU recently expressed opposition to the plan.

The debate about the additional tunnel stems from the city’s desire to extend Ericsson Drive, a truncated public street that sprouts off U.S. 460 onto the LU campus, next to the LaHaye Ice Center.

i don't like it because it would put even more traffic on campus, and the tunnel is supposed to help alleviate traffic, not increase it

Man, that's a bad idea. Sounds like they're gonna eminent domain it. It's bad enough that the campus has a highway running right through it, and train tracks on the other side, and airport traffic above it. Sure just throw in a shortcut to the highway. You'd need another pedestrian bridge just to get across campus.

Well if/when that tunnel at Harvard is constructed, won't people be using it to shortcut to 460 anyway, or is that road supposed to go elsewhere on campus?

Actually, I think a two-lane tunnel is pretty shortsighted.
