It's that cold in the upper atmosphere...and is an indication as to how cold its going to get here over the next few days.
and the 1 PM Airport readings:

I think sleet/icing occurs when the upper atmosphere is very cold and the air down here is above freezing. And snow happens when the air down here is also below freezing. Something like that. It's been a while since I had earth science.

All I can say is that it was brutally cold. We had just hiked with my family up to the monogram when it started coming down. We instantly were reminded we weren't in Houston anymore.

Yeah, we made it but nearly froze in the process with the sleet.
Today we scaled the Peaks of Otter as snow flurries fell around us.
I am so looking forward to a warm bed in Texas on Thursday.
