So I just want to say while I really don't have enough time myself to watch much TV when their are good football games, baseball games or even a big news story on I like to check it out on TV if I have the chance. This being said IPTV (Liberty's solution to filtering TV, so its online--ridiculous) still seems to be down since the fire last week. However, even when IPTV is up, its lame. It has terrible graphics and lags, sometimes you don't even get a picture! THIS IS NOT ACCEPTABLE!

We can do better and get some cable, in every single room. I think the fact that we don't have an option for cable in every room borders on ridiculous. I usually look at a newspaper to keep up with current events, or get on the internet or listen to my XM radio and even occasionally for a special event will make the long trek to the East Clubhouse or the Student Center to watch TV. However, many of my friends tell me that when they come to Liberty they feel like they lose touch with the rest of the world because they're use to watching TV to get their sports and news.

Living at Liberty without regular TV is almost like living in a communist country where the government controls what they want you to hear. They filter everything to give you the picture they want you to see. Its not that bad here, and I'm not saying its communist here but you get the idea, anyone that goes to Liberty knows that theres a certain amount of indoctrination that Liberty tries to do to their students conforming them to the views of the institution. This while maybe they mean well is still not right. We need public TV access, and its nothing more than what NORMAL Universities offer! What is Liberty afarid of? That through letting students have unfiltered TV Liberty will go down the drain and become Liberal or something? God Forbid! LOL

This problem needs to be fixed and IPTV is NOT the answer. We need Cable and we need it NOW! Anything less won't cut it! What are we going to have to do to get this changed? Facebook group? Petition? Protest? We need change and we need to bring a solution to this problem!!

Now, granted, the actual monthly bill isn't that much, but when you consider that the only dorms on campus that are cable ready are the quads, you'll see that it is insanely expensive to run that much cable. It has been looked at for years.

IPTV is the solution that was the most cost effective. Now, granted, it's not very good at times. However, are you trying to watch it through a wireless connection? If so, the picture isn't going to be very good. Also, the IT department told the people in charge that the picture was great. When the people in charge asked students, they found out that the picture wasn't great, and the people in charge (I really don't remember who it is, that's why I keep calling them that) went to IT to get the problem fixed. Things take time though. They're constantly working on trying to get things better.

Also, don't act like you have no options for tv. We're so much further along than students were just five years ago. Almost every tv station in America puts their tv shows online, including the news stories. You may not get it right when it comes on tv, but that stuff is easily accessible.

Yes, I know it's hard to watch football games and live sports. That's the one thing that is lacking in terms of accessibility. I don't have a solution for that right now.

Other than sports, the main complaint isn't that things aren't accessible, it's that they're not convenient.

I understand its expensive, but when a school is getting a state-of-the art ski slope, suddenly the basic things in life like Cable TV, no matter how expensive look like they should be offered. Granted I personally would rather go skiing and do something active than sit around and watch TV, for some big sporting events I would rather have TV and feel it is a right students should have! As far as do I have wireless or a cable hooked up to my computer Ive watched it with the cable and it still has problems.
Maybe Liberty has made great strides in the past 5 years, but I just spoke with one of my friends here who is now in Grad school here and he informed me that when he was a freshman here he was told Liberty would have Cable soon. 6 years later and no Cable, maybe the strides haven't been as big as we'd like to think they are.

First off, you're making the same mistake all Liberty students with a problem make - you're not looking at everything.

a) The ski slope was donated. Liberty is not paying for it.

b) The Tilley Center, the new student center right next to Lahaye, is having big screens and projectors installed so that the big games you're speaking of can be broadcast, and if I'm not mistaken be broadcast in HD. Yes, I realize this is not the convenience of your dorm room, but it's better than nothing.

You were also told by someone that we'd have cable soon. Who told you that? Do you not realize unsubstantiated rumors fly on this campus faster than actual flies. There were already rumors going around 30 minutes after the hockey game last night that someone got arrested and things like that. You can't believe everything you hear on this campus.

wait Liberty doesn't have cable tv?

i don't know how much it would cost to make buildings cable ready, but basic cable tv service from comcast (which is around 60ish channels) is less than 50 bucks a month. if the school were to make a deal with comcast, they could get it cheaper. that's what LC has done. the cost is built into a person's technology fee (unless they live off-campus, then they don't have it built in), so you have to pay for it rather you want it or not. i have a feeling that not many people fall into that category.

oh and by the way, you can filter with cable too. it's called blocking channels. if LU ahd cable tv and wanted to block MTV they could.

it has nothing to do with filtering it, but good job at an attempt to make LU look dumb. you obviously have no idea how much the initial cost would be to run cable through all of the dorms on campus. the monthly bill for the service isn't the problem, its the startup/setup cost. If you think it is necessary, get your money together and call up the school and let them know you are ready to donate the money to put cable in the dorms. i'm sure they'd happily do it if you paid for it.
Trust me, it as been looked in to. More option through IPTV have been looked into also, but there is no need to waste money on that until it works properly and as was expressed in the first post there are still difficulties with that system.

Its easy to criticize everything from the outside, but the school only has so much money to work with and can't do everything and please everybody. The big/special stuff we get (ski slope, student center, etc) is all donated with specific monies by large donors. If you want something to happen bad enough, put your money where your mouth is.

As for financially, the people who make decisions always know more than we do, so kraut what we have is what we have and youre probably better off appreciating the idea that the school has tried to get us tv without tacking on more and more money to our bills. Yes, its super slow on Superbowl Sunday, but you get the bonus of the Liberty Channel, which means 24/7 with Falwell, Hindson, Towns and stories we really dont wanna know about, and that never gets bogged down.

Personally, Im fine with IPTV. Between that and ESPN360 I watch everything I would have anyway, and to be honest because its been a while with no cable I would either A) Not watch it at all or B) Watch it way too much to get work done.

Also Jon IPTV doesnt work on wireless, unless a new update has been recently issued

Of course, that would make sense, because you never lived on campus, meaning youve never really had to use this IPTV gizmo. Of course I think every student who has lived on the dorms for a semester knows that wireless doesnt work. The ones who dont know that have just used a wire the whole time anyway.

I know Longwood has cable in their dorms, and most of their dorms are a lot older than just about every building on Liberty's campus.

I love how things get better every year at LU but every year students think their human rights are being violated. No, LU does not indoctrinate you (at least not anymore than any place that teaches you does). I'm not gonna let you say something so absurd and not get challenged on it. They expect you to conform to the LU culture. Pretty big difference.

Another important fact i think no one has mentioned is the fact that the student center and east clubhouse close for Sunday services, wendsday night, and close at 11:30 on week nights. This is an important fact that should not be overlooked because there have been many times one of the NFL games of the week would be playing when 5:30 would roll around and everyone would have to leave. But this rule just isn't just for regular season games, its a flat and firm rule. It doesn't matter if its the Super Bowl or the World Series they shut it down at the time specified. This is another thing that should be changed, but I'll save that for another time. Think about it though, for something as big as the Super Bowl, Playoffs or World Series shouldn't a person be able to watch it without having to go through all the hassle of going off campus, to BWW's or whatever. I can remember vividly last year when the world series was on and because it was wendsday night i missed part of it. Another time a playoff game went into extra innings and it was turned off... with the game on the line! These are just a few examples but there are many more.

All of these problems could be avoided if students just had cable in their rooms. People can say whatever they want about it being expensive, or students just feeling too entitled, whatever, thats fine, but I for one would pay an extra $50 on my technology fee if it meant cable. When your paying $20,000 a year for school whats another $50 or $100? Its nothing when looking at the overall big picture SuperJon likes to allude to. The bookstore sure doesn't see a problem with over pricing a book $50. Or my favorite is paying $60 for an access code so I'll be able to do my math homework online. I'm sure if you polled students they wouldn't even care about paying the extra money for Cable when they looked at the "big picture."
