Haize, we were getting along so well for a solid couple of weeks too! I really think you would agree with my outlook on employees though. If an employee is disgruntled and wants to leave (Pat Riley in The Winner Within would call them a cancer) then they should leave, in fact it might even be better for the office morale and for the person leaving's sanity....thank the Lord they dont handcuff all of us to our desks and chairs anymore....that really made it tougher

Nicely said.
I absolutely agree with you 100%*

I think we're all nuts for trying to generalize a University with 5,000 employees and hundreds and hundreds of managers. I bet we have some managers that even you would want to come back for Haize! I'm sure we also have some that lack good managerial skills.

This reminds me of the time a newspaper went to Doc for a response about a family member coming out of the closet (I think he lived somewhere kinda far away, which was odd b/c I thought every Falwell was in a 50 mile radius of here but anyway) they thought Doc would get fired up, but instead he laughed it off and said I'm sure there are! We have a big family...I'm sure there are some in jail and some that should be in jail.

Why are they disgruntled? Why do they want to leave? Is there a forming pattern to the answers to these questions?

"I don't care what other people think," is a motto of our generation, but it's bad policy for leadership. I'm not at LU anymore, but from what I'm reading here, maybe there's a negative pattern developing...? I wouldn't know.

Spirited debate!

HMO - you sound like John Kerry in reverse. You were against my post before you were for my post ha! As for Pat Riley, he has recanted quite a bit of his statements over the years from The Winner Within. The , as stated earlier is WHY is the employee disgruntled? Your absolutely right, they just may be a malcontent and it would be better for everyone if they moved on. On the other hand it may be a case of misperception by either side and something that can be remedied to the benefit of both parties.
Since you brought my past into it I will respond. I absolutely loved the two managers I worked for on the Mtn. Unfortunately, neither one of them are there anymore, for various reasons. You are correct that there are people there with whom I know I would enjoy working for now. There are also those there who have attitudes and perceptions that baffle me to this day.
I will say you are just happy you got out with out the huge Sport Marketing project certain professors assigned :D

You could start a Facebook group with 20 members and get things changed at Liberty. Liberty appears to have flaws, although I'm not sure this could be considered one.

And I'm not equipped to say whether or not it's true at LU. You're saying it's not true. Some perspectives shared in this thread lead one to believe it is. Who can say?

Whoa, ya take some time off for summer, and all kind of things happen. I realize I'm late to the party, but I have a side issue on this one.

Has anyone looked at the plans for the future? There's no parking AT ALL for anyone who works near DeMoss. I like green space and occasionally hug a tree (when no one's looking...=), but we need to be realistic about this. I've lived in two of the three largest cities in the US, and believe me, riding the bus everyday is my idea of Pergatory -- not having to is one of the reasons I liked the idea of moving to Lynchburg and found a house 7 minutes away from LU (if I wanted it to take longer to get to work, I would have found a house further away).

Before the faculty who work in the DeMoss area are sentenced to the rest of their working life on a bus, I'd like to challenge the Chancellor (and the two Provosts) to ride a bus every day for a month, whether it's convenient or not, rain, shine, or snow, whether there's a big appointment with the Trustees or the golf course, and see whether they still think it's a good idea. It can add up to an hour to both ends of the work day if you have to make sure that you get to the park & ride early enough to cover all negative possibilities, including buses not running on time and just missing a bus or weather or whatever, even if it usually should only take 15-20 minutes.

If one student can't find a parking space or the buses are running late, that one or several students are inconvenienced. If faculty miss half a class because the buses aren't on time, up to 200 students are inconvenienced. I fear architects love green space because it makes them look good, and they'd probably prefer that no one used their buildings after they built them so they'd always look good, but on behalf of those who have to live with their decisions, let me plead for some parking for faculty.

Wait, let me catch my breath, this is a long rant.

Okay, I'm just a voice in the wilderness, but I had to say it.

At least one Dean that I know recently bought an electic motor scooter to get around on campus; in addition, I kid you not, I saw a faculty member riding a unicycle on campus today.

You see, my friend voice, you dare to think and not live in this utopia where nobody drives cars or needs cars. Apparently, cars are evil, disgusting things that ruin the planet. In fact, I'm ticked that I can't ride a light rail up all the way my mountain from Lynchburg! :D

Look, I agree that less roads around LU would make the campus look better. But, whether some of you utopians like it or not, it's easier to drive your car to LU than it is to catch the horse buggy at Bedford. Plus, Lynchburg hasn't grown to the point that you need mass transit to get where you're going. (sorry, utopians). And for those of us who make an almost 50 mile each way commute, parking at some shady apartment 15 minutes from campus is not a viable answer.

I agree that adding more green space makes LU look better. But if there will be no alternative to parking, then I'm totally against it. I'll even park my car on top of the mountain and walk to class. Just give me some place to park on campus.

Yes, and we all saw how well bussing works with the Blue Angel air show, right...?

Yeah, because we're talking about taking a bus from Bedford to Liberty.

Stop whining and making exaggerations to make yourself seem like a victim. We're all smarter than that.

They're asking you to park at one end of the campus and walk to the other. At most it's a 15 minute walk. On days that it's raining, you give yourself five extra minutes for the bus and you're there. Boo freaking hoo. You spend that much time searching for a parking spot close to your building now as it is.

exactly. I use to walk from the circle quad area to Campus North in 15 minutes 3 days a week. It took 15 minutes. It kept me in shape.

This was before the luxury of the bus system too. People like to complain and be lazy, it was like that when I was a student and it won't disappear ever. It still makes me shake my head

Back before the tunnel was built (2003 or 2004 I think) I had to walk from my dorm to the bridge over 460 to get to class. 30 minutes one way

Look, I like the idea of parking cars on the two extremes of campus, just as long as there's spots available.

Besides, I could use the exercise. :D

You should've gotten a ride with someone. I remember the days before East Campus was called East Campus...6 dorms, and parking was either that side of 460 or upper P1, and pot holes big enough to swallow your car. If I ever had to walk, someone would always stop and pick me up on the way to or from class, or I'd catch a ride with a quadmate.

Now I don't want to turn into one of those guys that say "I HAD IT SOOOOO HARD...blah, blah blah"...because there is always room for improvement. I think parking garages on the outskirts of campus is the way to go, but they don't pay me the big bucks to make those decisions.

I desire for my school to continue to improve and look and feel like a legitimate major college campus. The future plans does that and I just feel the complaints about walking, riding the bus, etc come from people who are lazy. Sounds harsh, but its true.
