Devin, thx for the pics. Great to be able to see whats going on down there.

As an aside: someone* see if JB can pull that construction cam outta his closet (the one that used to be on Hancock or the one on top of the student side of the 'bill)

fire that bad-boy up so I can waste another year of my life watching guys pour concrete and set steel.

*HoMO: you're not doing anything besides G-T-L, get over there and find that camera

Pics (and article) about the rooftop patio on top of DeMoss Hall:
Rooftop patio provides scenic view of campus

May 18, 2012 : Liberty University News Service
Workers placed the framework for a new rooftop patio on Arthur S. DeMoss Learning Center, Liberty University's main academic building, this week. Construction began in August 2011 and is expected to be completed this month.

The spacious veranda will provide a beautiful view from the heart of the academic campus. From this prime spot, students will be able to see the continuing campus transformation take place, including the new Jerry Falwell Library, currently under construction.

Another great idea regarding LU's expansion, this on the James River:
Liberty University to resubmit James River dock request
By: Scott Marshall | The Amherst New Era-Progress
Published: May 23, 2012
Liberty University wants to build a 128-foot dock and boat ramp on the James River near River Road in Madison Heights...The university owns nearly an acre at the site, at 747 River Road. LU plans to renovate a former printing plant at the site, and also wants access to 12.9 acres on Daniel Island, a portion of which is in Amherst County. The proposal has been proceeding through the planning commission process. To build the dock, LU must obtain a special exception to the county’s zoning ordinance, officials say...

Students have expressed interest in the project. “Outdoor recreation is a big part of our student activities long-range plan,” said Lee Beaumont, LU’s director of auxiliary services, in an email. “This parcel will also serve as a much-needed training area for our men’s and women’s crew teams in addition to general recreational activities.”...LU envisions using the site for canoeing, kayaking, ropes courses, trails and zip lines. The university also would like to host an annual regatta for the school’s crew team.

BUMP--Have we talked any about the new soccer field and track?

I was up in the tower today for the Chancellor's 50th birthday party, which gave me a bird's eye view of the soccer/track complex below.

It looks like they have moved the field (with new sod) and track a few yards SOUTH (toward the new visitor's center), because now the shot put circle is INSIDE the track. They have pulled up all the old track, and it looks like they are preparing to lay a new track down next.

I think all this must be new construction since graduation just a few weeks ago.

I think JB had some pics on twitter a while back of backhoes ripping up the track. I just assumed I was the last to know.

If memory serves it was late May. And I don't believe the field was moved at all, but they did flip steeplechase and javelin to the south end.

Article here complete with side show

EDIT: just checked @LUADJeff, he's been posting pics since at least May 18. lotsa work going on

Thanks for the update and link to that article, PAmedic!

I may have misread, but a few months back I thought I read that the entire track complex was being moved to the clearing below the monogram so the soccer field could be moved away from the new baseball stadium?

If that isn't the case, what's going over by the monogram? Generic athletic practice fields?

Love seeing all the changes ever time I drive through campus!

At one time, LU had posted a 5 year plan. A considerable amount has changed to the campus plans since then. In the 5 year plan, new "traditional" dorms were going to be built, along with intramural fields. There were plans announced in the local fish wrap that a new road/bridge would also be build bridging 460 over to odd fellows road.

I believe you are correct. Must admit I'm a little disappointed that track didn't get it's own place. I think the benefits to both T/F and Soccer programs would have been worth the expense, but I guess the numbers didn't indicate that. After all, it's not like space is an issue.

But it would've been sweet to have the field right up against the stands for soccer, and for T/F to have their own entire infield to play around on.

Medic -

I would think the current outdoor track is a temporary spot. My guess is that the current indoor facility will eventually be used for classroom/office space, and when that happens I would guess a standalone indoor/outdoor track facility will be built. The sheer awesomeness of the theatre department has warranted several expansions already, and I think the film school is currently finding a home near the indoor track as well. I wouldn't be surprised to see more expansions of the theatre department/film school in the next few years (makes sense to keep them together, in the same area), and in that case a standalone indoor/outdoor track facility as part of a REC field complex on that section of campus east is a real possibility.

I may well be the only loser monitoring each of the camera feeds like a psycopath but FYI they've added a couple different views of both Falwell Library and the Vines addition. Really shows the scale(s) of the project(s).

Actually, this morning I noticed a brandy-new "WEST" camera angle of the library construction. By far the best look we've seen yet and shows the actual layout of the future "lawn" or "Square" or whatever we're gonna be calling it (the area behind DeMoss that used to have all the flags and the fountain)

i'm pathetic.

1. looks like the majority of the vines addition structural steel is now up. at least the columns and trusses.

2. cant understand what is going on up on the baseball field. Looks like "dig a big hole, fill in a big hole. Dig another big hole, fill in that big hole. Repeat". someone needs to narrate for me.

3. did they take down the old SAGA building? or whatever they made the old academic buildings into (the ones off DeMoss)
