Evangelical Catholic is an oxymoron when it comes to orthodox views. The Catholic doctrine is ant-Christian and all you have to do is look at their statement on salvation. They believe if anyone believes in justification by faith alone then they are to be an anathema.

I would be disgusted if LU hired a president who was Catholic. It goes directly against our statement of faith mission.

My two cents in regards to Pence:

#1 - He is the opposite direction we need to head in, we do not need another political lightning rod at the helm.

#2 - I doubt we are in the good graces of the MAGApublicans since Jerry's exit, I could be wrong.

Don't get me wrong...I like Pence a lot, but that's not the direction we need to go, IMHO. Not just him, but that particular resume all together. I think we need someone who views LU as a cherished commodity that is used as a multi-dimensional approach to a single, most noble mission ( I would think that's what we as alumni see, I hope). I believe that's what JF Sr. believed and envisioned. No matter what your major was or in what capacity you were called to LU....you were first being molded as a Champion for Christ. A president who is invested long-term in the mission, the kids, faculty, staff, alumni and all who have ownership in the institution. We should not be a stepping stone. The resume of our next president should reflect experience and motivation directly related to those aforementioned characteristics...as well as a visionary who can develop and evolve programs (academic, athletic, community, etc.) that further the single mission we have always embraced. A well-known name shouldn't even be a qualifier in any form, for this position. If we have a "John Doe" that has all of these attributes....I'd be proud to call him or her....President.

LU does need a "well known" name as new President. Doesn't need a "John Doe". The only negative, up front I see with Pence is, "4 years" and he's gone, if he seeks nomination in 2024.

Why?

I'm not saying I'm opposed depending on the individual but you just kind of throw stuff out there and hope it sticks. Then you can claim you were somehow right.

Anyways. I am not against a name but the big thing for a president is someone you know has a strong walk with Christ, a strong academic background and someone who is willing to commit long-term to Liberty and the foundation we have. VPOTUS and most of the other names don't really fit all of those areas. Some but not all.

But I'll be honest. I'd rather not have a big name at this stage.

Whether they are our favorite politician or our least favorite, there is always compromise in politics and often moral "ambiguity". Let's stay away from politicians. We can play in the game but let's not let the game play us.

You basically completely contradicted yourself in your last 2 statements. As a "general" rule, retired Generals are not "well known".

It depends on the General.

We don't want Colin Powell. Name another one who is actually a household name.

Have not been following this thread lately and just read some of the posts about John Piper. Love his ministry. Where can I view the convocation?

BTW, his theology is similar to John Mcarthur in that he goes the direction the bible takes him. He's hard to pigon-hole. I would classify him more reformed Baptist than anything since He believes in immersion over sprinkling.

Unpopular Opinion (not that it’s ever stopped me before). The more I’ve thought about it the more I like the thought of Pence taking over the President role. The one caveat being he doesn’t run in 2024. He’s even keeled but strong in his convictions. He’s sort of the Anti Trump in terms of his personality. He will bring instant credibility to the school but not a lot of baggage. He was the counterbalance to Trumps bellicosity and dynamic leadership style. Staid and steady with a bunch of connections in the MAGA and Conservative ranks who will not be that big of a Political lightening Rod despite his last job. He can raise money, speak the conviction and clarity the core beliefs of LU and flat out live them.
Best name I’ve heard mentioned yet

How is he qualified to run a University? @Purple Haize that has always been your question to others and somehow it is overlooked here?

For his role as President? To raise money, be a Public face of the University. Have a high level view of how large complex organizations work. He has a JD which is not ideal for me but that’s where you make sure you have a solid academician running that side of things. He can do a good job running the organization as a whole. Let someone like @Cider Jim run academics. He’s an exception to my rule but he checks a lot of boxes

At least you admit he goes against your rule.

He is going to be involved in politics and won't be a long-term solution. There are many other reasons I don't want him but that reason alone should be enough for most to say "no thanks"

I'm not interested in someone as a rental.

If Ben Carson wasn't a seventh day Adventist he'd be a fun candidate. Not a politician by trade, overwhelmingly intelligent, academic and articulate, and a little sleepy.

I do think looking to the chaplain corps of the military is a good place to look. People who have made a career of faith based leadership. Not saying it's a prerequisite, just an intelligent place to search.

Is there anyone else at the top in a non faith career field that wears their faith on their sleeve? Someone to move the school towards STEM and research would be excellent.
