I received my copy of the Liberty Journal a few days ago. It was really exciting to read all the things going on at LU now and in the near future. Great job by the writers and editors--not to mention the LU administration for moving ahead on so many fronts at a time when others are having to cut back and reduce their vision.
We'll be back in Lynchburg in April to do some work on our properties and we'll be sure to drive by LU to see the new construction underway.

I was surprised and pleased to see that the Liberty Journal was in inserted in Sunday's copy of Lynchburg's News and Advance newspaper. What a great idea--and I just hope the locals will take the time to read it.

Wow...shocked they would cover anything with Liberty, as the Roanoke paper tends to exclude the Flames out of their sports coverage.

RICHMOND --
If Lynchburg were to build a civic center, an amendment to state law approved by a House committee Monday could help pay for it.

Del. Kathy Byron, R-Bedford County, amended a Senate bill to allow sales-tax revenue collected at civic center events in Lynchburg to go toward paying off bonds that might be used to finance a center’s construction.

Byron said Lynchburg officials did not request the action.

However, she said she saw an opportunity to possibly assist Lynchburg officials as they hold discussions on whether to build a civic center.

Kimball Payne, Lynchburg’s city manager, said he was surprised to learn about Byron’s amendment.

“But anything anyone can do to give us greater flexibility is a good thing, I guess,” Payne said.

The Region 2000 planning body started a feasibility study last year into whether a civic center should be built in the Lynchburg area.

A marketing study by consultants in June 2011 indicated the region’s demographics could support a civic center, if Liberty University were its anchor tenant.

The study assumed the center would consist of a sports, entertainment and convention complex with about 10,000 seats and an ice rink, located close to the LU campus.

Bryan David, executive director of Region 2000’s Economic Development Council, said this latest feasibility study could be finished within 60 days and no immediate action is expected on the project.

“We are still very much in just a feasibility-analysis phase,” he said. “We haven’t come to any conclusions on whether it’s viable or not.”

David added possibilities for a civic center have been bolstered by LU’s recent interest in partnering in a facility. But there are no guarantees.

”There’s more work to be done on this,” he said.

Byron’s amendment was attached to Senate Bill 684, sponsored by Sen. Jill Holtzman Vogel, R-Winchester. The bill’s original purpose was to add Winchester the list of cities that have the option of using sales-tax revenue to pay for a facility; the amended bill adds Lynchburg to the list as well.

Byron amended the bill during a meeting of the House Finance Committee, of which she is a member.

The amendment still needs the approval of the full House of Delegates and Senate, and a signature by Gov. Bob McDonnell before it can take effect.

In reference to the New England Campus, the Boston Globe is running a story about today.

http://www.bostonglobe.com/metro/2012/0 ... paign=8315

But what I really appreciate was this quote about the town
With Liberty as a front-runner to get the campus, Northfield, with a population of 2,883, seems positioned to suddenly become a New England hub for conservative Christianity. That prospect is stirring mixed feelings in a town that needs more jobs and commerce, but whose yoga classes and folk concerts bespeak a culturally liberal ethos far from that of the Bible Belt.
Just the idea that apparently, Yoga and Folk Music are the epitome of Liberal compared to Christianity.

I still personally hope this goes through as just LU North Campus. Would love that.

My guess would be to open up possibilities for minor league hockey and all of the ice touring companies that could come through the venue (i.e. Disney on Ice).

As for the Massachusetts situation, it appears to be more intriguing than practical at first glance. Having D.L. Moody's place would be fitting for LU.

I'd be curious to see how that seed was planted in Byron's head. Hmmm.... Bedford County Delegate... the city didn't request it...

As a city resident, I would really urge caution for the city as they consider this civic center proposal. I really think that it will end up being more of a burden than a blessing to the city. I also noted the detail on Vines improvements in the last Journal. It sure would be great to see basketball in there, but it would be tough to fill. Is it correct to assume that LU would only hold sporting events in a civic center once expansion on the Vines is finished?

I don't see it being a burden to the City, but another attractive marketing tool. The City brings in a lot on money from Tourism events and this will allow us to bring in even more. With Liberty even offering to subsidize cost it's a no brainer. Most MSA's our size have some sort of civic center - and there is no reason we can't support one also.

With JPJ in wine and cheese country and the RCC and, ugh, SCC a bit west what type of niche would a LCC have? Advantages? LU would be the main tenant but outside of that? Just asking.

If you want to appeal to Purple's WVU crowd (and the Tech folks), bring in some "Rasslin'."
