Haize is a highly educated guy, but I wonder if Logic knows the literary allusion of the albatross (without Googling it). Knowing its author and poem and also knowing who wrote about Yoknapatawpha County are 2 important questions on our Quiz Bowl application survey.

I do agree that this is a big decision we must make in the very near future. I also agree an off-campus civic center would not be our best bet. We need something on campus. I'm not sure if gutting the Vines is the answer though.
#368077
The civic center being proposed most recently was to be on LU's campus owned by the city. Not sure how all that would work but thats what I've read.

Also, we should all know that you can't put upper balconies in the Vines. Remember how you couldn't build the 3rd or 4th floor of Demoss because of the foundation. Exactly  All we need is some more of that root of all evil stuff $$$, then we can pack in 15k into the Vines.

Know the poem and author I do not, the meaning however is quite logical when considering the sheer size and unappealing aesthetic nature of an albatross. Haize could have also described it as "an elephant in the room" or a host of others.

Well whatever our decision is, we're probably going to have to do something to accomodate convocation and the sporting events possibly affected in the meanwhile

Well shouldnt it be obvious Captain Smartypants? If youre going to make such a sweeping change that has to be considered, especially if we decide to gut the Vines Center entirely

guys, not unless you are an engineer can you definitvely say that the building can/cannot support an upper deck so why even argue it? Logic makes a good thought that those designs for the vines expansion show upper deck seating on both sides but not all the way around, so with his vision it could right? maybe that design was because the foundation could not support more, or maybe it was just that is all LU wanted to do at the time becausse as we all know things change at the drop of a hat at LU.

There is a big difference between the Albatross reference and saying an elephant is in the room. Now that you didn't pass that test, go ahead and Google it.

SMOOTH are you saying that drawing isn't set in stone? Things change at the drop of a hat? What next? Gambling at Ricks?

Just build a second 3k stadium on campus. Host a HS BB game of the week to better LU's image in the city, IMS finals, local talent concerts, volleyball and wrestling Crybaby

Then build a parking garage off campus and a monorail that takes you on campus.

Do all of this before replacing the trailer park circle.

Finally someone using their head. If we've already drawn up 2 decks, why not 4?

Haize, are you on the "inside" and know for sure what you're talking about? If so, please enlighten us!

Seriously? If they have drawn up plans for 2 Decks why not 4?
As for engineers and lode weights, ask the owners and builders of The Mandalay Bay in Vegas how that worked out for them.
Here is some observational home work for you.
Count the number of rows in the upper section of the artist drawing.
Measure the same number of rows on the bottom section
Add that number to where the seats end now.( guestimation is fine)
Don't forget to:
Measure the additional height you will be adding to the current structure
Take into account the lode bearing pillars
Decide what to do with the raised platforms that are currently on each side and where the proposed new seating will be.
The area outside the Vines that will be needed to accommodate the added height and breadth of the structure

As for the soil we can assume the worst. It may or may not be insurmountable (look at what they did with the Bill and those soil problems). But would it be viable?
That should give you something to do when you get bored in convo. Assuming of course you are not a resident student who lives off campus.

I was listening to 90.9 today and the chancellor made an appearance on one of the shows (Ninth Period I think its called) and he gave some explanation as to what the plan is with regard to the Vines (at least in short form):

1. The Vines can support a second deck.
2. They are pushing hard for the civic center project
3. Here is the plan for convocation/sporting events (as I understood it from his interview):

a. Build the civic center off campus
b. Move convocation and basketball/volleyball games to the civic center (convocation would be shortened to accomodate students having to go to said civic center as well as changes to time in between classes) since the Vines Center will be closed for a year (approximate length of the expansion project I believe)
c. Upon completion of the project, use Vines Center as permanent convocation center and keep basketball/volleyball/concerts at the civic center.

Once there is a link to the interview I will post it here (oh and to whoever has been saying that I met with the chancellor to find out what Im supposed to post on here...sorely mistaken)

Still not a fan of an off campus civic center for our games. The only addendum to that is the definition of 'off campus'.
If the Vines will now be a Convocation Hall that sort of changes a lot of the variables in its set up. Although I do like the idea of a Vines Convocation Center, lots of possibilities on that one!

My guess (I dont think they asked where the would want the civic center to be) is that its going in the land just beyond the intramural fields and behind the Springhill Suites off 29/Wards Road and 460 West. A lot of that is contingent on the civic center project because as I said, convocations would have to temporarily be moved there once its built

Putting the "civic center" or "bigger arena" on the edge of campus for convocation and remodel The Vines to take out about 1500-2000 seats. You could make it an awesome basketball/volleyball arena if it didn't have to be multiple purpose.

this +10000000000000

I don't get moving basketball/vollyball to a larger arena. A 6500 seat arena with nicer amenities and a better layout for basketball seems much better then moving them to a larger arena. I don't get that mindset at all.

Rime of the Ancient Mariner, IIRC. ;)

Can't remember who wrote about Yoknapatawpha County, unfortunately, so I don't pass either. Crybaby
