When I lived in Austin we'd go to the mall for a walk in cool air when it was 99 outside. Which was many days. Same in Atlanta. I much rather walk around in Perimeter Mall on a hot steamy day than outside.

I can see Macy's and Penny's from the mall, Goody's from candlers station, maybe something else, i can't remember exactly whats over there. Also places from other parts of town that want to be closer to the university, and probably some other stores from the mall.
I think RR will replace Macy's and whatever else just fine, and that the new movies will rejuvenate the mall. It will bring in a ton of people, which in turn will spend money in stores. If they give it a face lift they'll be good to go.
Goody's? Wha? Let's see if Big Lots wants to relocate, they'd be great for Crossroads! Anchor stores for the people!

Come on, Badger. Tell me you didn't enjoy strolling around the Arboretum passing by cow statues while slurping down Amy's ice cream. I'd take that over Barton Creek or Lakeline Mall anyday.

Goody's is the perfect second tier stores for places like the mall. The one in Candler's Station is absolutely horrible.

It is.

However, with the type of store it is, give it new management and people who can turn it into a good store and it'll be a gold mine here in town. With the type of clothes they have and the type of students we have, a good Goody's would flourish.

This really sucks. Aside from the fact that Lynchburg will probably never get a Short Pump style mall and/or anything that will draw regionally, the Crossroads Colonnade location is one of the few places around town that would be ideal to build a place that would be a regional attraction. The proximity to 460 would keep the out-of-town traffic on the highways, minimizing congestion on most in-town roads (Wards Road notwithstanding).

some Goody's are awesome. the one here has always been terrible. I wouldn't even go in it, but everytime I'm home I go in that one. Like SJ said, with proper management, it could do really well in the new mall. If nothing else it could move to RR when other move out. Another that hasn't been mentioned is Toy's R Us. That location would get them a lot more traffic than where they are now

i hate malls no matter if they are outdoor or indoors...but i would much rather deal with an indoors mall...I have been to two outdoor malls in florida and even though they are nice its either too bloody hot or a random thunderstorm will break out...in an indoor mall at least its climate controlled like many have said...I do not know why outdoor malls seem to be the new fad...but i believe it will be a quickly fading fad....especially along the east coast...i guess i could be wrong....then again the plans for this thing in the burg are just another ward's crossing...what a joke...

The school is doing their part in this project by building the road ...
Liberty road project taking shape

By Alicia Petska
Published: July 15, 2008

Liberty University is starting work on a new road that will one day connect to the planned Crossroads Colonnade shopping center.

The road — which in its final form will extend from LU campus east to U.S. 29 opposite the airport — is part of an earlier agreement struck between the school, project developer AIG Baker and Campbell County.

LU is responsible for constructing the section of the four-lane road that bridges the Norfolk Southern tracks, just south of the U.S. 29/U.S. 460 interchange.

The remainder will be built by AIG, which recently delayed its own start date due to the nation’s slowing economy. Current timetables have the Alabama-based company assuming control of the property in early 2010, with construction on the 900,000-square-foot Crossroads center to finish sometime in 2011.

Yeah, this design is not what Lynchburg needs. A "Short Pump" style would be the best option. Or at least North Hills in Raleigh.

Other projects submitted for review are an indoor soccer facility, new tennis courts, and new athletic fields along the base of Candlers Mountain, which will require the construction of an exit from U.S. 460.
:woohoo :cartwheels :pbjtime

Sorry, couldn't help but notice that in the article as well

I did enjoy many afternoons floating in Barton Springs--a unique place in this country. Also out at Lake Travis praying for puffs of wind to keep my sailboat moving. Many days it was just a nice floating swim platform and we'd have to paddle it back to the dock. Austin in the early 80's when I lived there was a magic place. Still cheap and not overrun by development. Great music everywhere and nice people. Went back a couple of years ago and barely recoginized the place. But I guess I'm a little responsible as my work helped pave the way for some of that new development.

i really don't know if lynchburg could support a short pump type mall. sure it would pull a few from danville and roanoke, but still i'm not sure it would be enough to keep a big mall going.
i thought the short pump type was originally the plan, so i'm guessing they analyzed it and changed their mind?
even if it falls through, it looks like we'll end up with another entrance/exit to campus, so at least something will be gained

I'm just wondering how these places are going to find workers. It seems like many employers in this area are having difficulty meeting their staffing needs already. I guess the new businesses could find help from those who have been fired/quit from everywhere else.

Workers? LU will have 11,400 students in the fall, many of whom will be looking for work to pay their tuition.

Yes, and they are more then willing to stay here in the summer...not to mention the students that come home from other schools in the summer....I can list 100 things that would be considered that would come before workers would be a problem

I could never find a PT job when I was in college. If you weren't one of the first groups back from summer break, all of the jobs were taken.

it was pretty easy for me to find one every summer here in Lynchburg once I realized trying to get one in retail was too much hassle. various manual labor companies/organizations are always looking for help...
