Some profs. don't even take roll -- I believe LUconn is correct, attendance is mandated by each individual department... our resident profs. should be able to shed more light.

Like my biology class. Today was the first Friday I've gone all semester. I've missed at least one class a week so far.

I know you've been waiting for either Cider or me to weigh in. Here goes..Students get one freebie...
...then there's a progressive point loss up to 4 absences...then they lose enough points that cost 10 percent of their grade. If they make every class....they get max attendance points. Trust me...attendance and how to properly "deduct" has been a big issue for faculty in past years.

So...in my classes...you attend every class...it boosts you almost a letter grade. Why? Because in our profession...the biggest part of success in "being there;" and out students need to learn that right off.

agreed, i picked out some teachers based on the repuation of no attendance taken....i think some classes i went to 4 all year.....just for the tests. So i was able to get a B, plus work making $$$ during those classes......a little research really helped me not to have to spend every weekend night working normal college jobs.

I'm guessing those who attend only a couple classes a semester and still pull high grades rely on others in the class for notes and what to study. I guess that would really stink if no one would help you.

i had a history class at LC. slept through class every day because all the professor did was recite the material from the text book. only went to class because part of the grade was based on attendance. at the end of the school year, with only one class session left remaining, he finally decided to approach me and say "if you are going to just sleep in class you might as well not even show up. it's disrespectful to me and your classmates" yet half the class would sleep through class. if i had decided to do the stupid thing I would have said "I think it's disrespectful to the students that you recite the material from the book that they were required to take notes on before hand, so they would ahve already read the text before you lectured on it. i find that disrespectful because you are wasting the money these kids parents are paying to send their kid to school here. and by having an attendance policy, its disrespectful to me because I have clearly proven all year long that I am going to get an A+ on everything you give me while I sleep through your class and forcing me to stay here is wasting my time."

Good grief SUPER you sound like "One time, at band camp....." with your coastal comparisons.
As for attendance MAN have they gotten slack in the ole SMGT attendance. I took random attendance, and usually did that via an extra credit quiz with great questions like "Where was Paul headed when he was on the road to Damascus". It provided "encouragement" to get to class ON TIME.
We had a 2 skip on T/TR and 3 skip M/W/F. After that you got docked a letter grade.
