Dickey's has the atmosphere of a southern "BBQ Joint" (unlike the upscale Schmokies in Wyndhurst). The walls and the dark wood are a little like Cracker Barrel, and you have to order and pay before you can sit down. No menus except for the signs on the wall above the cashier. And the big windows give you have a lovely view of the camper store across the street. My wife said the front of the building reminded her of the Alamo.

I noticed when they were building it that it was a wood frame. I thought that was pretty odd. Seems like a BBQ place is would be more prone to burn down with the constant smoking.

I went to Spry's on Timberlake beside the Blockbuster last night. They boast "Carolina BBQ". While it wasn't perfect, it was far better than any other BBQ I've had here in VA. I will go back there to meet my BBQ needs.

Whatever that crap is that passes for BBQ in VA.......it ain't BBQ!!!!

BLW, have you been to the Silver Pig in Madison Heights? I took Bryson there, and he thought it tasted just like the NC bbq that he was used to back home.

It tastes just like WESTERN NC BBQ. It's close to eastern, better than Virginian, but enough of a difference that I can tell. My dad could tell the difference when he came up, as well.

Plus, Bryson is a dook fan......so his outlook on life is going to be tainted.

Is there a place anywhere near the 'Burg for good BBQ? I wanna get some good BBQ when I get back to town, see if it compares to Bryd's.

Depends on what you define as "good". Do you like bbq from Carolina, Texas, Memphis, or Kansas City? Does your bbq have to be beef brisqet, pulled pork, ribs, sausage, chicken, or turkey?

Silver Pig has only pulled pork.
Dickey's & Schmokies have a little bit of everything.

Well, I went to Dickeys and hated it, but will try it again once they kinda get settled in.

And to me, I will go with any style, but prefer Carolina or KC. but mainly Carolina. And I prefer pork, but chicken and turkey are good, too.

Sounds like Remington Grill to me. We all know how that one ended.

Cider Jim wrote:FlamesDad, I love Carolina BBQ, but for those of us not originally from NC, let's just say that it is an "acquired taste," and I absolutely love it now--it fact, I had lunch at Silver Pig in Madison Heights just yesterday. :D

But I have to say that I'm a little skeptical about a Texas-based BBQ franchise attempting to serve real North Carolina BBQ.
Sort of like beer? Actually the first time I tasted it, in N. Carolina no less, I absolutely LOVED it!! Of course I felt the same about........never mind

And having said that I absolutely LOATH Silver Pig. Now DADDY BIM's has some GREAT BBQ especially the atmosphere that some people like. Very "authentic" If you liike NC BBQ no better place in town!

Lefty, what did you order at Dickey's and why did you hate it?

Purple, you are the first person that I've ever heard (beside Laurant) who ever gave Daddy Bims a favorable review.

Mac, I loved Remington Grill, but they had some nasty chopped beef brisket.

I had the pulled pork sandwhich with wafle fries.

It was flavorless, kinda dry/tough, cold, not a good portion size, and the sauce was unimpressive.

I went to Dickey's tonight.

My pulled pork mostly consisted of pork-flavored fat. It was one big gelatinous lump. My ribs were okay. A little different than I'm used to, but not bad. The sauced tasted kind of generic to me. Sides were decent. (I had green beans and fried okra.) Just short of $28 for the wife's sandwich, my two-meat plate and the boy's children's plate.

2.5 out of 5 stars.

I was a fan too; it was a disappointment when they closed their doors. I really liked their barbecue sauce. Oh well, at least Five Guys moved into their old Wards location.

Loved Remington's fresh cut fries, but don't get Super going about the meat at 5 Guys.

Like I said, maybe I just had a bad experience. It was bad enough I don't want to try again, though.

just finished eating a pulled pork sandwich from dickey's...not impressed..and i'm not even a bbq snob....it just was really dry meat and the sauce wasn't that great...but the waffle fries are pretty good...so i guess i got something out of this 7 dollar meal

Made a drive-by trip to Dickey's after the ladies game: picked up a pound of their pork ribs for $11.99, which is about 8 very meaty ribs worth. Mrs. Cider was very disappointed that I didn't bring her some Fried Onion Tanglers. But we both loved the ribs--they were much more filling than your traditional baby backs.

I was on the fence before, but I might have to give this place a try. Who can turn down something called Fried Onion Tanglers? Not this guy.

Went to Daddy Bims over the weekend. They boast "Carolina BBQ & Oklahoma Ribs"....well, the bbq I had seemed like a mixture of both, perhaps "Okolina Style BBQ" should be their slogan. That is NOT east Carolina bbq. It was okay & it had some similarities of Carolina bbq, but alas, it did not measure up. For my money, I'll still go to Spry's. Its not perfect either, but its closer to the real thing.

"Oklahoma Ribs"? In other words a cheap knockoff of Texan like everything else in that Indian Territory.
