I'm thinking if I ever need to blow something up I should consult the woolly mustache.

He will have a way. He would most likely be able to hand you the plans from when he was a student.

On the facebook group there is a kid claiming to be his friend saying that they made those things earlier for a bonfire. If it's true that they were made 2 weeks earlier it would make sense. He likely just flipped off at the mouth around a very concerned family member. I could see someone hear him say that he had them in his car and he'd use them on the protesters if they messed up doc's funeral.

Stupid to even threaten... but at least he didn't make them at that time with that intent. From what I hear about them, they were basically able to keep a fire going but not 'explode'. That would help his story about a bonfire. I suppose he's not happy with whomever the family member was that turned him in.

i was thinking about that also. i bet there is going to be some serious conflict between him and whichever member turned him in.

sounds like this kid just got screwed if he made an off the wall comment about taking out the protestors. anyone might have said something along those lines.

still shouldn't have made bombs though.

If you have 5 bombs in the trunk of your car, and you make comments about blowing up protestors...you deserve what you have coming to you.

oh yea. i certainly wasn't trying to say the kid should not have been arrested. i mean... he made bombs. thank God he was arrested.

if he wanted to have some fun with a campfire, he should have bought fire crackers, or some marshmellows.

I can't defend the kid here but that line about "25,000 stored pictures" makes me wonder about the prosecution in this case. Those images are more than likely temporary internet files that get loaded onto your computer whenever you visit a website. To assume someone's character based on that is ludicrous at best.

I guess one really has to wonder what this kid's intentions were. I mean, he was heavily into porn, admired nazis, skinheads, and the crips.

Falwell lobbied hard against pornography, was an ardent supporter of Israel and often met with Israeli leaders, and he was hated by the skinheads and the IRA with just as much vehemence as the radical left.

So, as more facts begin to emerege, you can definetly build the case that this kid may have been anti-Falwell and his intensions may have been to disrupt the funeral and may have hurt some of the mourners in the process. The idea that he would deny this means nothing to me at this stage.

Hey, it wouldn't be the first time that a kid from a Christian school demonstrated hatred for its leaders and stray in the opposite direction: Marylin Manson, Friedrich Nietzsche, ect.

at this point are we so sure he was going after the protesters?

Honestly, at this point, I don't think he was going after anyone. Based on his history with the tabasco sauce bomb in high school, he would have chickened out on this one, too. I don't think this kid is anything more than an idiot that said the wrong thing to a well-meaning citizen. The prosecution releasing this obviously inflammatory information to the media sends up giant red flags for me about this case and where they intend to go with it.

Nothing better than a Assistant US Attorney using the pun "releasing a ticking time bomb in the streets" I might have gone with a different pun right there, I'm not sure though :)

Yellow journalists can spin this any way they want, however, the most notorious bomber of them all went to Yale and his name is Osama Bin Laden. Another notable terorist, Theodore Kaczynski, known as the uni-bomber, killed innocent people in the name of evironmentalism, and he attended Harvard.

Having said that, had LU's administration known that this kid was heavy into porn and had deep sympathies for the occult, then he would have been forced into some extensive counseling at the very least, but most likely he would have been expelled, unless of course, he seemed like he was seeking God for deliverance from it all.

This is a bit off topic...but until the university realizes the need for a fully function counseling center (which had been proposed and shot down at the 11th hour)...then the LU community cannot fully reach those who need such services.
(off rant)

Or yellow message-board posters.

Oh, put down the crack pipe!

Wow! A 19-year old that looks at porn! This kid must surely be the second coming of Larry Flynt!

And where do you get the "occult" from? There isn't any reference to anything "occult" in the entire article! This kid is clearly a moron but that's it. Unfortunately, thanks to Virginia Tech he's going to get the book thrown at him and his life is over.

Who were his accomplices? His accomplces were an enlisted man and a high school student.

What was the common bond between the three? I seriously doubt that it had anything to do with a disdain for Phelps. It's much more likely that whatever bonded the three together had something to do with the attempted bombing. What was their common interest? It's unlikely that it had something to do with love and devotion to Falwell because this kid was heavy into porn and the occult. Furthermore, he wasn't hanging out with LU students, but on the contrary, he planned this event with two outcasts, one a high school student, and the other an enlisted man, both with no connection to LU. Personally, I think that these kids were influenced by the occultic version of the far right and that they may have very well harmed some of the mourners at Falwell's funeral, had their plan succeeded .
