Does anyone else get the feeling Jerry is playing "Risk" with Lynchburg? Not that I am complaining...

Is there anywhere that I could find a decent arial photo of LU/River Ridge Area? Google Earth is not so good in Central VA.

Much more up to date and detailed than Google Maps for the Lynchburg area.

Maybe I'm just not that observant, but I have never noticed that the home side at the Bill is bigger than the student side.

Also, it is a shame that we didn't know about the possibility of River Ridge when this whole thing started. That would have been a great place to start a campus (except for the dumb railroad tracks). That would add a crazy amount of space that wouldn't involve blowing up half of a mountain.

From two earlier threads from awhile back concerning arena talk and at the first mention of the LU land sale:

1. http://flamefans.com/forums/viewtopic.p ... 00&start=0
PeterParker said: When all the stores from River Ridge mall bolt for the new mall, buy River Ridge on the cheap, level it and put your LU/City Partnership state of the Art Showpiece there...easy access to the general population, plenty of parking to hold you over until you need to build a parking garage...oh, you mean in reality, maybe put it where the Circle dorms are now.

2. http://flamefans.com/forums/viewtopic.p ... 02&start=0

PeterParker said: That's interesting information...if the scenario played out that River Ridge went under for some reason, what would be the chances that LU would make a bid at getting their hands on that piece of real estate? Even if they didn't develop it and held onto it, it's increase in value over the coming years would provide a nice piece of collateral for future plans.

Whatever new development LU does do for the campus parts, IMO they should tap the expertise of these guys (they are tapped to do the buildout of the entire Vedanta University--see http://flamefans.com/viewtopic.php?t=1700), they specialize in building compelling academic buildings. Duke, Syracuse and Messiah, among others, have utilized these guys to design their projects.

Although, just recently some LU talking heads downplayed the rumor that began circulating about making a play for the River Ridge property; of course, perhaps that was poker strategy to show disinterest so as not to seem like an overeager buyer.

City Counsel: I can't think, there's all this noise.

JF: Or is it because I've built a stronghold around Greenland? I've driven
you out of Western Europe and I've left you teetering on the brink of complete
annihilation.

City Counsel: I'm not beaten yet. I still have armies in the Ukraine.

JF: Ha ha, the Ukraine. Do you know what the Ukraine is? It's a sitting
duck. A road apple. The Ukraine is weak. It's feeble. I think it's
time to put the hurt on the Ukraine.

I wouldnt be surprised if they read our board from time to time. We do a lot of local discussion, and they always seem to be talking about what we're talking about. I guess it could be just coincidental, since it's all current events though.

*edit* also they mentioned it was going to be 100 acres. That seems a lot smaller than I thought it was going to be.

If you are on campus, stop by the free newspaper stand in front of the bookstore and pick up a paper. On the front page, there are 2 separate articles about new shopping centers in Lynchburg that total 300 acres of land area. The one on Lakeside drive (see link below) wants to expand an extra 70 acres, making a 130 acre area now a full 200 acres:

http://www.newsadvance.com/servlet/Sate ... ws!archive

Below that article, there was another one about the 100 acres LU has that they want to see for this outdoor mall. Their (our) asking price is $200,000 an acre, which, if my math is correct, would be $20 million worth of land. This article, unfortunately, did not make the online version of the paper, so it's only available in hard copy.

The new mall will be called Crossroads Colonnade because it is located near the intersection of U.S. 460 and U.S. 29 South.
Anybody got a pronunciation? Who names a mall after a cross between a colon and lemonade?

Bada bing

I thought the same thing when I first started seeing shopping centers referred to as colonnades a decade or so ago.

Is it just me or doesn't the RR location seem to be a superior better retail location than the proposed sites? Why not bulldoze RR (like nearly every mall in America is having done right now) and build the new outdoor one there?

True, but we don't own it. So I guess it's best that they let us put them out of business.

which would then make it the ideal location for a *cough* civic center *cough*, or perhaps an engineering school.

If Lynchburg could get this mall and a civic center, can you imagine what that would do to Lynchburg? Buy land now!

And then the anyone who wants it could buy it for half of what they would probably ask now.

$20 million would be a nice START to the university's endowment...
...or wise use to purchase River Ridge Mall for the site of a future MED. SCHOOL and CIVIC CENTER complex.

Heck, we could take that 20 mill and stick it in an online savings account and earn 1 mill per year. I'm sure we could do better but that's FDIC 0% risk.

Perhaps a few bucks out of the $20M could underwrite a broadcast truck.
