yeah, they to have a point since that is the name of the mountain after all...but i am not much of a fan of the city of lynchburg itself, so it doesn't matter to me...probably not the best attitude, but its the truth

The "duct tape" stuff is definitely temporary. It went up in a few days, and it will come down in a few days. Hopefully that will be sooner than later.

My friend was up on the Peaks of Otter this weekend and he said you could see it from the top of Sharp Top...can't wait till its there permanently, I might have to climb the Peaks just to see it...and I hope they go with the interlocking letters, b/c that would be awesome.

WoW What are they putting in the water over on campus. That place is butt ugly. And I know ugly, trust me! I was with my boss yesterday and I was trying to explain what that large scab was on the side of the mountain. He asked why Liberty gets to put there name on the mountain and thought it would look tacky. Can't say I disagree. It sort of reminds me of Scar in a crowd? One bald mark in a sea of hair!!!
They are going to have to do A LOT of work to get that looking good and my hopes are not high that it will turn out very nicely. Plus, what about up keep of it? Absolutely tacky and a waste of money and what little community good will that is left!
But that is just my opinion :D

I think this project has the potential to be pretty cool or a permanant embarassing black eye displayed for all to see. We're always complaing about the school's lack of tradition and trademarks, like a tower or something like that. Well, this could be it. I do wish they had some sort of artist rendition to put my mind at ease though. Because there is a chance that it could look really really stupid. And it's not really something we can cover up if it does.

I would have liked to have seen it on the hill more behind the football stadium. That would have been a great backdrop, or perhaps they are saving that spot for a "Touchdown Jerry." (with due props to Haize for the idea I just stole).

My vote is for interlocking letters to better keep with their own brand identity guide. I agree that this has the potential to be very nice or an eyesore to all who pass by it.

Having lived in Washington DC suburbs I can tell you that whenever there is change to a landscape that there will always be backlash. I wasn't around for this but the Washington Monument, The Vietnam memorial and the Lincoln memorial all were thought of as not very asthetic and shouldn't be done. Also the WWII memorial got a lot of negative feedback. All of those things are accepted now obviously although the WWII thing is fairly new (I like it a lot though). These things take time but they need to get it right and maintain it. After a few years it will just be another thing in the background and no one will have a strong opinion either way......And I am NOT BALD!!! Haize, I'm gonna get you man. :P :P

The LU actually looked decent for being temporary.

I had an entire vanfull of people at homecomming...they noticed it, and they seemed to like it. I was the only LU grad in the car, most had never been to a game.

No one in the van said it was ugly...and they wouldn've if they thought that it was...it will look even nicer when it's stone.

I'm hoping this will be the equivalent of the tower, like was mentioned earlier (although LU also did do a good job dressing up the north campus tower as well.)

Code: Select all
Adam,

I thought the same thing. In fact, we have already decided to use the same font as in the logo but we are not sure the letters will be easily readable if they are interlocked. Lee, what was your point to me about interlocking? Didn't you say the letters would have to be much smaller.

Adam, thank you for your input.

Jerry
Sirs -

I do not think interlocking letters would work in this case. If we did interlock we would need to use two different color stones to get the outline when the L meets the U (see attached logo pic) – I am not sure that is possible. We are only allowed to use natural occurring stones and cannot paint the rocks thus limiting our options.

However, we can offset the L and the U (U below the L) like the logo with the curved letters vice the block letters this weekend. We would need to shrink the size of the letters around 15-20% to make the letters fit the area we have available to us if we offset them. A good example is the L and U on the Ice Center bleachers. This combined with the nice texture of rock vice plastic, and landscaping of the surrounding terrain with groundcover will make it look very nice.

Our surveying crew is preparing drawings on a topo map for the new version which I will forward for thoughts.

Sincerely,

SLB

Thanks for the info ATrain. Even just offsetting them would look better than just side by side. They need to at least look somewhat collegiate.

I know there's bluestone somewhere up there. And there's got to be some sort of red colored rock on that mountain if they're stuck to native rocks. Anyway, it sounds like it's gonna be nice. Was there a picture attached to you email? You should upload it.

They could use blue limestone and red clay. That's as natural as you can get.

And they could add some violets to help set the area off. Perhaps some posies and pansies, too. It'll be quite the spot.

Somebody gave me the roses idea. The Brokeback-ness was not a SuperJon original thought.

the locals are a just reading into it as another attempt by Jerry to show that he made this town. Which I think he did make this town into what it is. They just don't like the fact a college defines who the town is, and its too conservative for them

Now I've never been much for online acronyms. I've probably used them maybe twice in my entire life and I think they were both "brb". But in respect to the above linked letters to the editor: LOL. What a freaking joke. here's a few jems
And so it is with renewed hope that I call out to you to stop this tragedy and start some healing.
I ask why commit such an act of destruction? I can answer that, more self promotion. I would think that somewhere in the bible this would probably be a sin.
Oh please please throw some scripture at us.
How many readers have been cut-off in traffic on Wards Road, passed on the Expressway by speeding drivers, or otherwise witness inconsiderate behavior only to see the now-familiar Liberty sticker and/or student parking sticker on the rear window/bumper?
What the freak is this guy even talking about? What does that have to do with anything. Not to mention it's not like Lynchburgers wrote the driving manual. If I had a dollar for evertime one of them has almost killed me...
Enjoy your university, but don’t impose your campus on the rest of the community. If you really believe in the principle of “Love thy neighbor,” prove it.
there it is! I guess we weren't doing whatever we wanted to our property. I guess it was our neighbor's property.
Was it really necessary or considerate to play that obnoxious music this past Wednesday evening so loud that everyone in Sheffield could hear it?

Uhh, you live next to a freaking railway. I think you've got other noises to worry about. Not to mention you either moved in with the knowledge of this school or you were there before and the existance of this school has raised your property value 50%+.
