Just found the best comment ever on the WSET story (WSET.com). This sums up who those opposed to LU really are:

I'm sure it will cut traffic and congestion on campus, but WHAT ABOUT THE REST OF US? Candler's Mt. Rd is already a parking lot and I can just imagine how it's going to be getting into the mall with LU Online students going in and out at all hours of the day. Liberty doesn't mind bringing tens of thousands of students to their school because they don't have to worry about the roads being clogged to the max. This is just ridiculous in every way.

Seriously? you dont WANT a college to grow? I sometimes think that some of the commenters are alums of Sweet Briar, LC and Randolph and they are bitter that the "new kid in town" came in, took a few lumps, hit the gym and now is the popular one getting the date with the head cheerleader (to turn a phrase)

Apparently our genius friend doesnt understand the concept of Liberty University ONLINE...with all the bitterness that seems to come whenever there is a story about LU, I still think my analogy fits though

It sounds like DeeBayBee thinks that our 70,000 LUO students from all over the world will suddenly be commuting to the mall.

Well if you really need tools replaced or fixed, the Sears in Farmville just moved locations within the past couple months, so I assume that means they aren't closing since it would be the stupidest thing Sears could have possibly done. I went in to the old location once, and then it was all tools and hardware stuff with a few TVs, so I've never been back since I don't need or want any of those right now. I do think the new location is bigger, so they may have expanded on their product offerings.

And as far as the people complaining about LU "buying up evertything," they are all hillbilly idiots. Lynchburg was a cesspool before Liberty started growing in bunches. I don't like everything Liberty does - of course I don't like everything any college does - but Lynchburg would be nowhere near as good as it is if there wasn't a big college/university in town. Charlottesville and Roanoke haven't grown enough to the point that it would provide a big, positive impact on Lynchburg.

Supposed to be late March- early April, but they are still looking for financial partners.

That´s actually good business for both. If anyone in the burg needs tools, it´s one stop shopping. They can check both places out while they are there and maybe while they are in Sears they see a refrigerator or a pair of pants they like.

I can't say my source, but I didn't quite have the cash to pony up when asked to invest. The space is actually large for the type of store- Sears Hometown Store. The appliance sales office remains and is still doing a pretty strong business just down the road, in the old Lowes by Tiny Town. If you want to invest or be involved, give them a call and they will direct to to the person opening the store.

Sears stores can actually be very small. When they are, they leave out the "softer side."

Good for food vendors, shopping... I wouldn't bet on it.

I would bet on it. It will be MUCH more convenient for hundreds of workers. The only potential problem would be parking, but I think there is enough spots there to not cause a hardship for mall shoppers.

Working at LUO, I can tell you everyone is very excited about this move. Parking next to the Lyn-comm dispatch center by TRBC where most of us currently park vs the Sears parking lot.... no brainer.
