I spent WAY too much time & money at the Fort in the Late '80s after the RAs quit patrolling the parking lot. It was already a dollar theatre by the time I arrived in '85. Everytimt I see The Lost Boys, Less Than Zero or Die Hard on cable late at night I think of that dump on Fort Avenue. Good times indeed.

TALLY So glad you are back, I missed you so much it hurt!! As for you vision statement I am so glad you don't disappoint. However, I think you are missing the vision on this one and you pointed it out. IMAX is a film based format. More and more movies are coming out in a digitized format, this is, IN THE FUTURE, going to make film obsolete. (Just look at Kodak and Fuji films divisions) So why drop 6 mil on a theatre whose projection format will be obsolete in a few years? Sure they will come out with a way to view LARGE scale like IMAX but that would cost more money! Just a thought

IMAX isnt just film, it's way beyond it's time when it comes to the Technology they put in it...heck have you ever seen a IMAX camera, they are about 500 pounds

For the record, I believe IMAX film looks much better than HDTV ... particularly when projected on a huge screen. Now that statement shouldn't be considered an endorsement of this project. Its just a point of clarification.

I have actually been on an IMAX set!!! When compared to old school projection systems they ARE high tech. Heck they are just plain high tech! BUT, and you make the point here, a 500 lb camera just isn't a practical instrument to mass produce movies, One of IMAx's uniquenesses (if that is a word) is the way film is run through the projector. This is a special film the is in short run through sideways inseted of up and down. Thus creating the larger picure. (OK Gi-Hugic ) With technology increases there will come a time when you can get the "IMAX Effect" with easy to use equipment, thus allowing more production at less cost. Now on the surface this would seem a good thing for the future. BUT that would assume production companies have a market for these types/sizes of films (currently they do not and forcasts aren't great) and if they did LU's Brokeback Lounge (I like the name!) would instantly lose it's "uniqueness" b/c EVERY theater would have the system. A system I remind you we would have to retrofit.
So unlike SLY, I am NOT running for office. I LOVE IMAX pictures, see them whenever I can. BUT it would be a fools errand to erect one at LU.

Suzanne Erickson doesn't want it- so that ends the speculation
Actually, I think her point is that its a great idea, but LU shouldn't do it: the city should. Ok- sounds good. I bet they're cutting the check right now.

Lynchburg News & Advance
June 4, 2006

City can't depend on LU forever

As city officials work together to redefine how Lynchburg is perceived by outsiders and residents, may they all chant one word over and over - diversity.
Last Sunday’s paper asked, should Liberty University build an IMAX theater? Sure, Liberty can build whatever they see fit.
The real question should be, should Lynchburg ride on the coattails of Liberty University to attract businesses and residents? I strongly say no.
The city should be striving to find private sector investors to attract young blood to the area. Does anyone stop and think that sure Lynchburg now has an ice rink and possibly an IMAX in the future, but that not all residents want to support Liberty Mountain.
Believe it or not, everyone in this city is not a conservative Christian. If Lynchburg wants to grow, compete for businesses and retain college graduates, then the city may have to be open to taking risks and not using Liberty University to take them for the city.
I am sure there is an old building downtown that is 85 feet high and 79 feet wide. Maybe Amazement Square or the museum system would jump on board.
Region 2000 is always seeking ways to recruit young adults to the area. Well, not all 20 and 30 somethings meet at church. Lynchburg needs bars, theaters, dance clubs and other social outlets, not just big box chain stores.
Lynchburg is a nice place to raise a family. That is why I am here, but if you don’t fit a certain mold it can be challenging. Lynchburg is known as being very conservative and closed minded and that is why some people move away and some choose not to come here in the first place.
It would be great to brand Lynchburg as an affordable happening place - no matter what race, creed or religion you are. I have a dream that Lynchburg isn’t branded as Liberty University, our history is too rich for that.

Actually, the city can depend on us just like every other city with a major college in it. Sure Lynchburg does have a good history. That and $1 can get you 2 apple pies at McDonalds. The fact is, this city has had a bunch of nitwits at the helm for sometime. It started with the retards who decided they didn't want a major train depot located here because it would be noisey. They then decided to build it in a little known town named Roanoke. So now, we have a ton of trains coming through anyway, and now we get to exist in the shadow of Roanoke too. Good idea guys. Fast forward to modern day and we have some psychotic city planner who's forcing business to the borders at campbell and bedford county so that we get all of the traffic and none of the revanue. So Suzanne, this city has nobody to blame but itself. Who knows what this place could have been. Enjoy our coattails because you will be forever riding them.

What exactly is in her mold that makes living here challenging? Is it her dependance on alcohol? Apparently she's looking for some more bars.

Amen to that.

Not all people who go to "bars" go to drink. One of my favorite places in Myrtle was Blarneystones at Broadway. I've never drank in my life, but that place had some awesome food and was fun to watch games there.

To me, there's no difference in Applebee's or any of those places that has a bar and a sports bar. Both places serve alcohol, it's whether you choose to drink or not. Buffalo Wild Wings is pretty much a bar in a lot of cases.

In the article from Suzane Erickson, she wrote, “Does anyone stop and think that sure Lynchburg now has an ice rink and possibly an IMAX in the future, but that not all residents want to support Liberty Mountain…Lynchburg is known as being very conservative and closed minded and that is why some people move away and some choose not to come here in the first place.”

Isn’t being open minded a two way street? I could turn her same argument around

“Does Suzanne stop and think that some people in Lynchburg actually attend Liberty and support the university on Candler’s mountain (funny she called it Liberty mountain – with all of the rich history of Lynchburg that she mentions). Maybe Suzanne needs to be a little more open-minded to Lynchbug residents using facilities like the ice skating rink at Liberty…b/c some potential students might feel that the residents are not supporting the school and then might choose not to come here in the first place…”

Just wanted to point out the silliness of someone arguing for open-mindedness when they're not willing to even set foot on a campus because they disagree with the views of the founder…

I also agree with SJ, places like Big Licks, Applebees, The Ale House, are all places you could consider sort-of like sports bars...

I'm pretty sure you're "Allowed" to go wherever, it's just what you do when you get there....at least it's worked for 4 years for me....but what can they say when you tell them you like the food and TV's...ya know?

Yeah, I've been going to Mudpuppies every Sunday during football season since I was a freshman. It's also my home during the Big East Tournament. You see tons of LU guys there. The whole basketball team used to show up for NFL action. It's gotten to be a little bit pricey (used to be $.25 wings on sunday but it's since gone up), and the staff tends to be obnoxious, but where else can you watch every single game at one time?

Ale House is safe, been there many times...and you're safe if you have a job that requires the service of alcohol too.

I remember if you were even caught watching a TV that had a beer ad on it at the time you could be expelled  For real though many folks who don't even drink have been kicked out of Liberty for being at a party or place where drinking was taking place. I am have not taken a big stand against alcohol or anything, I just choose not to drink. I like being sober and alert but that is just me. Liberty seems to have softened a little on this issue. Can you have beer in your dorms? From what I understand it has been done over the years. I used to have a friend that would come to our basketball games with alcohol in a squirt bottle! I won't mention any names because you old timers would recognize who it is for sure. You probably already know who I am talking about. Maybe Baldspot can write him up retroactively
