This is the definitive place to discuss everything that makes life on & off campus so unique in Central Virginia.

I would guess that the students may not buy the cost argument for not building a parking garage much longer when you consider the AA credit rating and revenue minus expenses of 200 million a year. Sooner or later they will catch on. A better idea may be to not allow freshmen to park cars anywhere on campus and use the spots saved for commuters. Many schools our size do not allow freshmen to have cars and that might be something we look into down the road.

Ideally....way back in the day Wards Road should have been zoned residential or at least mixed use. I think it would be awesome to have a Wyndhurst style Wards Road instead of the snarling mess we have now. 3,000 students walking to campus from a residential Wards Road would have made it more like a college town and would have solved a majority ofthe parking/traffic problems we have now.

There was another Champion article a while back that explained that the cost of the parking garage was not the issue at all. It said that engineers had studied the idea of a parking garage on campus and had concluded that a parking garage of any meaningful size would bring so much traffic into campus, the roads couldn't handle it and bus service would be unable to stay on schedule. I think it said that engineers had concluded that a new four-lane road through campus would have to be built just to bring the cars in and out of the parking garage. I took that to mean that, if LU ever built a parking garage, it would have to be some distance from the core of campus so, if that is true, why would a university that owns thousands of acres adjacent to campus build a parking garage some distance from campus? Wouldn't it make more sense just to build large satellite parking lots in Campbell County?

The only new lots I see are out around the perimeter of campus -- at Green or East. And regular parking lots don't bring in the huge number of cars that a parking garage would bring anyhow. Sorry, don't understand your point.

Alum, I know you and I have had our disagreements in the past, but I really think your idea for satelite parking on the east side (or campbell co) is the best idea I've heard. Only thing I could think is that we'd probably need another bridge.

Alum - 100 cars is 100 cars, wether they are in a garage or in a parking lot. "Parking Garage's" are not the problem - WHERE they are located, and WHO parks in them, is.

The chancellor's idea is to have cars park on the perimeter. Great. Build parking garages there. You can also build a parking garage for resident students near the dorm circle with access from 460. With one good donation, problem solved. :D

I'd settle for a parking garage on campus.

My point was that, if the parking garage was big enough to really make a difference, it would have 1000s of spaces, not 100, and, if it was located on campus, the campus road system wouldn't handle the traffic. Once you get out on the perimeter, what would be the point of building a parking garage v. a large parking lot unless there was a shortage of land? Either way, you still have a long walk or a bus ride to get in, right?

I am no environmental wacko, but I don't want acres of pavement around campus.

The lot next to Extended Stay is one of the perimeter lots I mentioned earlier.

When are we going to "raise the roof" and add 3k seats to the Vines?

http://www.liberty.edu/news/index.cfm?P ... N=13301942

Would love to see this happen. More students will walk to the Vines for ball games than make the trek over to Campbell County where a new Civic Center has been proposed. With the addition of the practice basketball courts behind the Vines it seems like a no brainer to keep all the basketball operations here. This place was ahead of its time back in 1990 and with a little touch up could still be a top flight arena.

You have to consider a couple things with that logic:

1. The Vines Center is the home of convocation. Where are they going to fit all 12,000+ of the on campus students for that? If they had it at TRBC, how would they transport them efficiently over to the church?
2. Athletics. A project like that would more than likely take 9-12 months to complete which means the volleyball and basketball teams for the most part would be affected. Where would they have their games? How would it affect LCA who obviously has home athletic events to consider as well?

Renovating the Vines isnt as easy as taking the roof off, bolting 3000 seats on and plopping it back on you know

Are you talking specifically about what to do with convo and basketball while they complete the renovation? Or are you talking about those being reasons to not do it in the first place?

Im saying that you have to consider necessary contingency plans for those things once they actually set the wheels in motion for such a renovation. I mean with the growth of the residential population they are going to HAVE to do it but they have to consider the events affected by that renovation once it actually starts. By the way, Im pretty sure volleyball would be affected as well once they do get started.

And if they were to post the plans publicly on the website, don't you think they have some sort of idea, if perhaps small, of what to do with the three teams and convo once they get started?

Build baby build!

Did I read that right? You are under the impression that the Vines Center was ahead of it time in the 90's? Do you get out much? It was/is horrible for basketball because you only have 1 court. The sound system is sketchy at best. Did I mention the leaks? I wonder if they still have the annual spring white water rafting trip down the stairs when it gets flooded. Seating is cramped and uncomfortable, more cramped now that the new seats are in. Did anyone ever figure out where the master switch is for the lights? The random blackouts are always fun! Locker room facilities? Weight room? Hospitalty room? Handicapped accessible? That place should have been razed a long time ago!
