Postman.

I think I'm on base. What I've seen is an isolated video on YouTube. That's what the rest of the world will see.

What you guys have (I'm assuming) is context. In your minds this was part of a great and hilarious hour of LU Convo.

The rest of us who are on the front lines trying to make a difference see a video where 1/3 of the time poverty is made fun of.

I'm sure that this was funny in context and I'm sure students who hear the need on a regular basis were able to see this in a different context. The truth however is that this video is now all alone in cyberspace and it was an error in judgement for our leaders to produce the first minute of it.

Again for the 3rd time, I find nothing wrong from about 1 minute in onward.... Its obvious that its about LU. But the first minute is undoubtably making fun of the stats and calls for help. That isn't funny.

Get out and actually build a church or feed the poor or help people who are abused or find kids foster care before you run your mouth about "people like me".

Those of us who have gone out into the real world know that videos like this only give people ammunition who look at us as being selfish and arrogant. When we make videos using the poor as our punchline we've gone too far.

Trut is SJ... you don't have a moral compass when it comes to these things. You're still talking like your 15 years old. Maybe as you mature you'll encounter poverty and understand that it's not a laughing matter. Maybe to kids who can afford college it's funny to laugh at the poor. To those of us who live and serve in the community... it's not funny. As an Alum it's insulting and disappointing. I can only imagine what the Mainstream Media would do with this video to discredit everything Dr. Falwell built.

Enjoy the quick laugh and wise cracks. You're not on my radar. Get a job, help the poor and then come talk.
Note :Im 27 not 18-22, so i dont' fit in your described demographic, but if this isn't a clear definition of "going off the deep end" then i dont' know what is......i think you tied your sensitive pants too tight and it cut off oxygen to your brain.

What's funny to me is that I wrote a total of 4-5 lines clearly explaining why I wasn't comfortable with it.

What a joke this board is becoming. If someone can't express their displeasure without being told to "take the stick out of your butt", that's an issue.

Schorcho, Sly and company... I'm glad to see this is what's being funded.

It actually accomplished humor for 3 minutes and 23 seconds, which, by all accounts, is what it was supposed to do.

And see, you can whine about getting blasted about your opinion being different, but the truth is, if it wasn't an opinion that was so completely out in left field, no one would blast you for it. We disagree on here all of the time and people have different opinions on everything. We don't blast them. We only blast the stupid people.

Just taking note of what my LU friends encourage:

Saying we shouldn't make fun of poverty is "stupid". Check.

Oh I read it the first two times, and you're wrong. The first minute uses real statistics to make fun of Liberty! At no point are the poor ridiculed or made fun of. The only people made fun of in that video are the students who paid Liberty to live on the Circle and the school for having a dorm that's sliding off into a ravine. The stats were only there to say that this is happening in the world and our campus is so bad that our students may as well be included in those stats. It made fun of US.

No, you certainly haven't. You haven't shown anything even close to a sense of humor. In fact, so far as I can remember, all you've really shown to us is an incredibly tight sphincter muscle that somehow manages to type.

Listen, I know you and I go around a lot, but there's a reason for it. You are too easily offended. You seem to just be waiting for the next person to come along and do something you disagree with so you can step out of your ivory tower and tell them how they should be living differently. If you had shown that you were actually a nice guy on here, maybe it wouldn't come across that way, but it does. You are the most condemning, critical and condescending person on this board. You may be well intentioned but all you've managed to accomplish with that uptight attitude is a lot of bridge burning. There's a reason this happens nearly every time you post your opinion on the board. Yes, you're certainly allowed, but when you put your big stinky smelly opinion out into the world, you need to be prepared to hear what others think about it.

I think that may be the first ever usage of sphincter on FlameFans.

You guys are hilarious. This video isn't making fun of poverty, it's spoofing a situation that happened on dorm circle.

Scorcho.

I don't care whether you think my view is wrong or not. Who are you?

I believe the major issues I've gotten into on the board have been related to morality. If I'm known as the man who acts like a man and speaks up on those issues, I'm okay with that. If I don't make friends on flamefans because of those views... I'm alright with that too.

I expressed already that there is context missing which most of you have that those of us outside of the Mountain don't have. I called a friend who was at the convo and asked and he agreed that in the big picture, it came across appropriately and within boundaries but that in and of itself he could see how without that context it could be taken as insensitive.

This is a message board fellas... I don't attempt to create a persona on here... I've always had my identity public. If people want to know more about me there are tons of ways to find out who I am. Most of the people on this board hide behind fake names.

I'm fine with the positions I've taken. I've encouraged the board not to drift to the lowest common denominator several times. In several cases the board finally came around. In others it hadn't. In some threads I just didn't comment.

So much of what I post about deals with real life. How we treat women, how we consider the poor, how we use language on here... etc. If those are the issues I'm ridiculed for I'm okay with that. I'm a man.

Go back and read this thread.... it got heated when I was told to take a stick out of my butt. That's how brave SJ is behind a keyboard and the rest of you guys seem to support it. Classless.

see you talk as if you are the only one that has lived in the "real world"...this is the kind of attitude I can not stand...its as if you believe I, or anybody else on this board, has been isolated for so long from the real world we can not begin to understand where you are coming from. The truth is there is much more to me then I would like to explain on this board. I have had the same kind of argument with another on this board...just because we are students at Liberty does not mean we have no clue what is going on in the real world...especially since some of us were forced into the real world right after high school having to work my butt off to get here...I have seen the real world, I have encountered real poverty and to assume I don't know anything about that kind of life is just plain silly....

With that said, I don't agree with you..and when people don't agree with someone on a message board people will let them know...did SJ go a bit far?? possibly...but what about the rest of us who aren't reacting in that way???

Postman...

I'm not ridiculing anyone who disagrees.

I watched the video. I read the thread. I added the only contrary opinion. I get blasted within minutes with the strength of a dude behind a keyboard. The rest of the pile on is nonsense.

I'm not attempting to belittle students. I pushed back on SJ specifically but even in the comment you cited, I didn't attack you. In fact I attempted to explain why I may hold a different view. I was not there. Period. Those of you who are on campus have heard tons and tons of jokes about Dorm 7. I get that. I haven't.

All I was saying is that while those immersed in the LU culture see this through those glasses.... those of us who are dealing with this issue day in and day out approach the video with that set of glasses.

I hold a view based on the world view I'm bringing to it.... others hold a different one. I personally don't think it's funny to use the stats and the likeness of serious poverty awarness campaigns as a platform to make fun of the dorm situation. Why? Because it's an issue I am very familiar with.

So again postman... I am not knocking college students. I'm knocking the fact that some people can't see that what makes them laugh at 22 years old in college is actually another person's real life situation.

I'm offended that not once was the generosity of Campus East was mentioned. Having spent roughly 4 years on East (3.5 technically), I can tell you that we are some of the kindest, most generous people on campus. We never even received any type appreciation from the jerkfaces on the Circle who we consistently employed to serve us smoothies in the clubhouse (and TIPPED as well), all we got were "East is full of rich snobs" insults. Well, I, for one, am not going to take it anymore. I encourage my brethren who remain on East to not give to the Relieving Poverty on the Circle Fund.

And Tally, since you asked, Scorcho is the dude who makes sure this board is operating smoothly everyday.

well, I guess I just don't see the harm in it...I don't see it as poking fun of poverty...I have seen other videos like this without knowing the context and still thought it was funny. Poverty is a serious thing, and if anybody views this video and comes away with it thinking that Liberty does not care about the poor then really its shame on them. Many people jump to conclusions about things without doing real research....and no matter what you do somebody will find a reason not to like you....if this is the reason people choose not to like Liberty then that is sad.

I completely disagree with you and I do think you are being a bit upright about it...but like you have said, just because you think somebody is uptight about something ti does not give you the right to personally attack the person...you are completely right on that...I just don't agree that this video is "opposite of what we should be doing"....to me it was just us laughing at ourselves...no more, no less....

Very Funny...Bravo.

Circle dorms have been sub-standard housing since they were put up. It is great to see the administration has a sense of humor and can laugh at themselves. I continue to be impressed with Jerry Jr. and the direction LU is going.

I can't begin to see where this might be offensive...it is spoofing a very well known commercial but the context is obviously meant for humor.

Yes, and maybe a bit overly sensitive...

Step back, take a deep breath, walk around the building, get some fresh air and then come back. This was funny and I haven't been in school at LU for 13 years...

I didn't ask you to care, and I didn't ask if you cared. I just thought it was important to be a man and let you know.
TallyW wrote:Who are you?
Does it matter? I've said numerous times before on this board exactly who I am and how I can be contacted. (In fact, there will be numerous options for contacting me at the bottom of this post.) That's probably not the wisest decision I've ever made, however, I've got nothing at all to hide. My name is Nick Tripp. I live in Lynchburg. I work at LU and have for several years now. While I don't technically own FlameFans.com (it's Sly's site), ownership is the only part of it that isn't my responsibility. It is operated, maintained and paid for by me. Is that enough or should I FedEx some hair over for a DNA sample?
TallyW wrote:I believe the major issues I've gotten into on the board have been related to morality. If I'm known as the man who acts like a man and speaks up on those issues, I'm okay with that. If I don't make friends on flamefans because of those views... I'm alright with that too.
The problem is that, for the most part, it's never been about your views. Your views could probably be taken in stride if your approach wasn't so arrogant and condescending. But you don't care what I think, so I'll just leave it at that.
TallyW wrote:I expressed already that there is context missing which most of you have that those of us outside of the Mountain don't have. It wasn't intended for audiences who don't know the context. In fact, I don't even know who put it on YouTube. It's not like the school did it. In fact, the only reason I posted it here is because I knew there were plenty of people who completely understand the context and would appreciate it IN context. You are the only person who has taken it out of context.
TallyW wrote:This is a message board fellas... I don't attempt to create a persona on here... I've always had my identity public. If people want to know more about me there are tons of ways to find out who I am. Most of the people on this board hide behind fake names.
No, some of the people on this board hide behind fake names. Most of those people have a good reason for that because this is, after all, a message board focused on athletics at LU. Sometimes public discourse about athletics can be sticky. Anonymity isn't necessarily a sign of cowardice, as you are implying. (Even if they didn't, it's not a wise thing to put your identity out on the Internet the way that I do, so it's hard to fault someone for that.) That aside, I'm really not sure what this being a message board has to do with anything. I understand that this isn't some alternate reality and have never treated it as such. In fact, I know exactly who you are. I have for some time now.
TallyW wrote:I'm fine with the positions I've taken.
Of course you are. You've never ever been wrong or apologetic in your time here. Mr. Right strikes again.
TallyW wrote:So much of what I post about deals with real life. How we treat women, how we consider the poor, how we use language on here... etc. If those are the issues I'm ridiculed for I'm okay with that. I'm a man.
I'm a man, too. If you're implying otherwise about me or anyone else on FlameFans (save our wonderful lady members), then I'd suggest you rethink who's taking things to the lowest common denominator. Again, I may disagree with some of your opinions but those are rarely the problem I have with you. You said earlier that you didn't care what I thought about you. Now you know how everyone else on FlameFans feels about your opinions of them and what they've said on here. That's why you're ridiculed.
TallyW wrote:Go back and read this thread.... it got heated when I was told to take a stick out of my butt.
To quote a certain Schrute: "False." This thread got heated when you posted your opinion. SJ might have been the first to reply, but my reply to you would have been the same even if he had never said a thing. That's just your perception of when things got heated.
TallyW wrote:That's how brave SJ is behind a keyboard and the rest of you guys seem to support it. Classless.
We support him because the vast majority of us know SJ and his heart and don't just pop in to pretend we're better than him from time to time. Most of us talk to him daily on here and have seen his passion for Liberty and athletics at Liberty. Most of us were here to read the story of how he arrived at LU. And a lot of us have spent time with him in person and know that he's a stand up guy with plenty of class. For what it's worth, there's no hiding going on here. FlameFans is a tool, not a cloak. I'd gladly say the same things to you in person that I've said to you here.
TallyW wrote:I'm knocking the fact that some people can't see that what makes them laugh at 22 years old in college is actually another person's real life situation.
Other people paid thousands of dollars to live in crappy dorms that are sliding off into a ravine? Man. Who knew it happened anywhere else?

Again I thought the video was funny and I was never set foot on campus. Anyway take it for what it is and laugh. If you are worried about what other people think about any situation when it comes to laughter then you will never be able to laugh. I would not worry what the world thinks about the video or LU because half the world will never like Liberty even if Jesus himself was in the video showing his humor.
