They've had two sets of engineers come in--the first didn't think anything needed to be done--the second wanted to dig underneath to see what the damage was.

Not as big a deal as it's going to be made out to be.

Jon gets his roommate back, temporarily, anyway.
No I don't. Deans won't let him.

I thought the general consensus what it was beyond repair...but this is what the faculty received, today:
Faculty:

This morning the executive decision was made to evacuate the students living on Main Campus Residence Hall 7 - floors 1 and 2. This decision was based on the evaluation and recommendation of engineers and university officials because the building requires some major structural repairs that requires the building to be empty. All residents of the building have been instructed they need to move out today. The office of Student Leadership and Office Of Student Housing are working to assist the students in their move and reassign them to temporary dorm rooms on other halls. Due to this inconvenience in the student’s lives today and the urgency of them needing to be moved out by 8pm tonight they will be excused from their classes beginning from 1:45pm thru the rest of the day today. Please allow students to make up any missed assignments, tests, etc. This excuse is effective for today only. Thank you for understanding and we appreciate you working with your students during this time of disruption.

"Beyond repair" is apparently relative to the amount of money available to make repairs. I kind of hoped we were just going to let it go.

I guess it was only a matter of time. Those dorms were always sketchy. I hope there's some sort of compensation in line for the students affected, in the way of a discount, rebate or something similar.

Hey, now that they are out of debt and the circle dorms are starting their march to extinction...how about put the new Towns Religion Hall building there instead of trying to retro fit the aging Religion Hall and grass that sucker over along with the accompanying parking lot. In a move that would harken to a longer term focus, they could take the couple million they are trying to raise for the retrofit and put it into constructing a new building on the circle which would allow them to make it a marquee style building on campus from an aesthetic perspective. (Maybe a centrally located rotunda-like building with grass surrounding it...in keeping with the stated architectural inspiration.)

There's no way that dorm is ever usable again. It needs to be torn down. There's no way to fix the problems that is has.

Been trying to keep my hands clean of this thread--but if you're condeming that building, they all look that way, all of them need to be torn down.

If they all look that way, then they all need to be condemned.

Put it this way, if you were getting a loan to live in that dorm (which essentially, half the kids are), there's no way the bank would sign off on it due to the condition of the buildings.

they all do need to come down...maybe this will be what they need to get the process rolling a little bit faster

They're just asking for a lawsuit if they put kids back in the dorm and it keeps messing up.

I have lived in 2 different dorms on the circle...they weren't quite as bad as dorm 7's condition...but there was plenty of problems, and plenty of cracks...I have been saying ever since I got here that those things need to go....but for some reason they kept focusing on growth and building more on east campus rather then improving the circle...

I just hope this is the push they need to move forward on improving the circle by tearing down these crap dorms and building some nicer ones

I've said for a year that we need to cap enrollment for a year or so, tear down the circle dorms, and then build East-style dorms there. You'd be able to sell the circle to more people, it'd make it look MUCH better, and you wouldn't have problems like this.

yeah...and I agree...I am not saying they have to be east style dorms...but you could build some nice new dorms for sure...

I don't think the traditional hall should be done away with. Yes, Campus East/Apartment Style are nice, but not everyone wants to live in that style hall. The traditional living experience is a staple of the college experience and shouldn't be erased.

But, yes, I agree they need to be rebuilt.

But why? Looks aren't the most important thing right now. Looks aren't hindering anything. If you can live in them why spend money you dont need to? I agree that they're hidious and I would love to see them go but, they serve their purpose.

Because they're falling apart. They weren't meant to be up this long. You can build traditional style dorms that are in much better condition that you don't have to worry about falling down into a ravine. The construction of those dorms is terrible.

There's no way you fixed problems like this in two weeks:

I have never inspected a house with a foundation as screwed up as that.

its not just looks. they're in terrible shape. stuff breaks in them all the time. plus, i'm sure that a crack in the floor the width of a quarter creates a problem besides looks. there's no way thats safe.

if they rebuild them they can make them bigger so they hold more people and nicer so they attract more students to campus.

that's crazy talk. Sure that one is falling over. But look at the leaning tower of Pisa. It's a monument! No but seriously, obviously that one may need to be condemned. But the others are fine. Temporary buildings that have lasted 20 years or so. I'd call that pretty darn good construction. The only thing that ever needs to be repaired are things that go wrong in every building: ceiling tiles, dry wall, water heaters, sinks falling off of walls when you stand on them, etc.

Nice.

I can imagine you trying to hit the sink from the top-bunk.
