I have never met him or been close enough to him to see. I am nearly 6-4. I was one of those Big Point guards back in the day. Chauncy Billups like. I will find out tomorrow though around 10 PM when I interview him at halftime. The 1st half of a football game is 3 hours right? No really I'm just making fun of myself a little about thinking it was halftime last week when it was just the 1st quarter. Can't wait to see the jumbo tron and talk with JFJ. I like that JFJ. Sounds like JFK. If that sticks, you heard it here first!

Where is the plaza? Is it that place by Wards & Timberlake, where the high schoolers used to cruise? (or do they still cruise the strip there, too?)

LUconn wrote:right off of Memorial Ave behind the library. Actually right accross the street from EC Glass. You may know it as that run down place where the "other" movie theatre is.

mrmacphisto wrote:This is an interesting development. There is currently a church in the Plaza that meets in the old J.Crew Clearance Store location. The place has been completely renovated on the inside and the building also hosts a late-night coffee shop/gathering place for 20 and 30-somethings during the school year. I wonder what will become of all that.
I am actually creating the website for that church -- they are currently looking for a new location and expected this all along. They were simply waiting for it to force them into a new place.

Thanks for the info and welcome to the board, Little Liz.

I wonder how long some of the leases are for the remaining tenants?

Thanks for the info Liz! Good to know the place will live on somewhere else. I actually checked out the coffee shop thing a couple of times (they call it CANVAS) and they had a cool setup there. It's one of the few places to go past midnight on Saturday nights, and was a good place to sign out to for LU campus-dwellers (it is/was an approved late night activity).

next LU needs to purchase downtown buildings and properties on main street.....then it would start to become a college town

We could put a big neon "LU" on top of the Allied Arts Building...

I would love to see a fight between LPD and LUPD over jurisdiction. I imagine it would play out like a parody of that scene in The Fugitive where Tommy Lee Jones tells the sheriff to back off.

I could be wrong, but isn't LUPD now a part of LPD??? or LUPD at least has jurisdiction in all of Lynchburg......i don't know..I may be dreaming it all up...

but I would like to see a LPD/LUPD showdown...it would be fun to watch

So to pull off the trifecta, LU just needs to land the River Ridge location and secure Candlers Station by brokering lease discounts at the new Colonade for existing businesses, and the highway landlocked campus is unlocked. Thus,

Plaza = Future Medical School in cooperation with Lynchburg General/Virginia Baptist

River Ridge = State of the art Arena/Conference Center (LU/City partnership)

Candlers Station = site of a completely new "The Bill." If room enough pair with a new baseball stadium also. ~or~ Move a new "The Bill" as an entertainment venue in conjunction with the Colonnade and swap the proposed 600 residential units over to the Candler's Station location. Okay not likely, but fun speculation nonetheless...

Regarding the railroad track inconvenience, here is a thought that is most likely too grandiose and completely filled with insurmountable legal and logistical issues: With 4500 acres under its control at its disposal, is it feasible at all given the track route for LU to do a land swap with the railroad company to reroute the tracks around a less intrusive area of the 4500 acres so they don't run on such a heavily traversed part of campus?

i'm not so sure about that. i called LUPD cause i broke down on 460 right between main campus and east, and after being on hold for like 10 minutes i was told they couldn't help me because they didn't have jurisdiction, and it would be too much of a liability for them to help.
i really don't understand how its a liablilty to park a car with lights on right in front of campus, where they can supposedly pull people and write tickets at?

WSET said they were going to put DLP and phone operations in there and lease the rest of the empty space.

Why would we build an all-new football stadium when we just did all of these upgrades to the current one? We can't just pick up the FOC and move it.

agreed, way to much $$$ invested in that to build any new football stadium anytime in the near future....

Has anyone looked into the idea of building some sort of pedestrian / car bridge over the railroad?
On a non-related note...I was doing some surfing last night and found this site that has quite a few postcards of Lynchburg from way, way back.
You should see the one of treasure island. http://www.retroweb.com/lynchburg/postcards.html

There's a planned pedestrian and vehicle tunnel under the tracks.

maybe they just told you that because they didn't want to help you...haha

If the Plaza is in Lynchburg's "bad part of town", then Lynchburg is doing OK crime-wise. Sure, I wouldn't leave my car unlocked there but I wouldn't leave it unlocked on campus either.

I wouldn't classify it as a bad part of town, but it's pretty close to those parts of town, plus it's just right across the road from gang infested ec glass high school.
